Stella Locks

Post by jungle tim »

I have read the other forum posts about locks and such but i was wondering if there were any recommendations from the Stella community specifically

Chains vs Disc locks - any recommended items?

Im a little concerned about the weight and the ease of cutting of a chain, ,should i be?

fyi My bike is garaged at night,

how hard is a stella to steal when the handle lock is on?

I garage mine too and haven't otherwise been too worried about it.

From what I know there is no disc lock being made that fits the stella because of how the disc is positioned in respect to the wheel, leaving no space for one. Some chains are harder to cut than others and some will discourage anybody but the most serious thieves.
Sadly when it does come to a serious thief no chain is going to hold them for more than a few minutes.

Very easy. One can just lift the front and wheel it away. Or just pop the column lock by pressing on the handlebars. Once that's broken nothing is stopping them from pushing it away or even hotwire it. I recently learned how easy it is to do that due to some unlucky circumstances I found myself in.

I use a disc lock on my 2012 4T Stella. I dont recall the make and model, but will look when I get home from work. I'm not convinced it does anything more than hopefully convince the theif to take the other guys scooter without the lock instead of mine.

I haven't yet- but It sounds like the best thing is to put one of those noise alarms so that while some one it lifting or rolling your stella away everyine within ear short is watching them do it and they give up for fear of being caught.

that or a big chain for the same purpose- just some thing that says "This little one's not worth the effort" ... that's about all you can do.

that and eat lunch while sitting on it.

Mine also unfortunately lives on the street. Another way to mitigate the risk is add theft insurance.

Which can cost less if you use security measures.

mine doesn't, but I don't live in a high risk area like a huge city would be.

Part of my professional life is as a network security guy. When people start asking me about hackers breaking in and how secure our systems are, I use the bank vault analogy. You can have the most secure bank vault in the world, but if I am bold enough to walk in while the vault is open and shoot the guard in the face, there is probably not anybody who is going to stop me. With security, the idea is to create as many layers as possible, so that the potential thief decides that it is too much trouble and moves on to the next guy who is not as secure.

If somebody wants to cut through a chain figuring nobody is going to pay attention to the wailing alarm, there is not much you can do. Just make it as annoying as possible for them so they will move on. And get comprehensive insurance.
