Turn Signal Question

Post by magnato1 »

Hey all,

I've noticed that my turn signals blink at a pretty high rate of speed, unlike a car which generally blinks a little slower. It seems like people don't see them that often and I do think that a lot of the problem is how quickly they blink, they're only lit up for such a short time, they're harder to see in the daylight. Anyways, I am curious if anyone knows how to change this. I know on a car you could probably just get a flasher unit with a higher resistance, can something similar be done with the Stella?

Also, one of the reflectors on my front fender is about to fall off. Tips on how to keep them on? Thanks.

I can't help you keep them on, but I know one thing you don't want to use... gorilla glue, someone at the dealer used it on my Stella for the reflectors. It didn't work and now I have to sand or chisel the stuff off, gonna need to repaint the fender afterwards. :x

For the reflectors, you could try GOOP Badge and Emblem adhesive. I've used it before to good success and it can be cleaned up more easily than most adhesives I've seen.

For the blinkers, look behind the battery to locate the flasher relay. I believe it's a 3-pole flasher. I would recommend one of the Tridon electronic flasher relays that they sell at Autozone. I replaced the thermal unit on my Vespa P200 and I'm pleased with the result. The blinker rate is stable and steady regardless of engine speed.

3M trim tape works really well too and can be removed.

As far as blinkers....I don't have a clue...I don't buy scooters with turn signals!

Psst, point 'em to some information on using hand signals, then. And what's with the Buddy and Burgie in your scoot list, eh?

You're making me want to graft an old set of semaphores onto my Cruiseaire, in the name of being a wiseacre. :P

JBenjimin:

Sorry man, I saw your post on the forum about the Gorilla Glue, that sucks, but at least your fender will be brand new and shiny, :D

az_slynch:

Thanks for the tip on the flashers, I'm glad someone else is unsatisfied with the way the stock flasher works. I wont get a chance to look at it tonight, but is it plug and play or would I have to do some soldering?

BuddyRaton:

Is 3M trim tape the same as normal double sided tape?

Magnato1, the Tridon flasher is a plug-in part. The trick is to check the pin identification on the back of your flasher relay; there are "P", "X" and "L" pins. Compare the two relays to make sure the pin location is stamped the same on both units.

I believe you can get away with the Model HD13. I looked at my buddy's 4T Stella (which has lousy blinkers) and noted that they use a round, three-pin module. I didn't check the pinout, though I suspect it's correct. Be sure to get the round one, so you can slip it in to the rubber securing ring that LML included for mounting it; if you use a square one, you'll need to figure out another mounting method.

Yeah. my Vespa had the original full-mechanical flasher and it annoyed the hell out of me. It blinked incredibly slow at idle and would spazz out at the top of first gear (shift, then cancel with ridin' on short gears). The SD12 (two-pin) fit right in and works consistently regardless of engine speed.

As a plus, it will stop working if system voltage falls below 11 volts. If the blinker stops, you'll know you have a low battery and still have the juice to run the brake and tail lights long enough to get home.

So you won't do turn signals, but you're willing to put up with that battery-assisted spark hooey (I have a '64 Benly 90, I know how evil those ignitions can be)?

I'd say yer loopy, but seeing that you've run the CBR, I'd be stating the obvious.

Oh, if you find a TS 125 frame, lemme know. I have a lovely engine block that just does't belong in an Allstate. :D

So, it turns out that the flasher is square and two pronged. I took it to O'Reilly Auto today to see if they could find a match, to no avail. Our local autozone sucks, pretty much all of the auto parts stores suck in this town, but that's another story. Anyways, I guess I am going to contact Scooterworks tomorrow in hopes that they'll be able to send me in the right direction for a replacement, unless anyone else here has done this?

Maybe this:

The 90 flashes/minute might be high for you, but it'll handle the load of incandescent too. 12V 10A rating.

Ok, so 90 flashes per minute still seems a little high, so I was looking at Tridon's website and the EP12 looks like its probably the exact replacement, undoubtedly a higher quality unit than what came on the 4t. I can't seem to find the EP12 for sale anywhere. I did find the EP37. I don't know very much about electronics, but is there a reason the EP37 wouldn't work? My guess is it may be too heavy duty and the blinkers just won't flash? Here's a link http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... 93121_0_0_

Yeah, I just looked at the EP37; it's rated to handle 16 lamps and up to 432W of power. Might work, might draw a little more that you expected.

I agree that the EP12 is probably a better fit. Turn signals are 12V 21W each. so a minimum of 42W would be enough to do the job.
