Hi all -- New member -- break in maintenance

Post by 79_Limited »

Hello all,

I am the proud owner of a 2012 Stella 4 stroke. So far I am loving the bike. It is strange when I park it how other people are attracted to it like a magnet.

Question.....when I get to my 500 mile maintenance schedule what all is involved? My local shop is about 50 miles away and I would prefer to do it all myself if at all possible. I am fairly handy with a wrench and not afraid to DIY.

Welcome. You should really let the dealer do the first service sso you don't void your warranty (JMO). after that diy all you want. The first mataince is a re tighting of all the nuts/bolts, changing the fluids, checking the kick start lever is working properly, and any adjustments to cables and such. I probably forgot a few things but I think I covered most of it.

The 4 strokes require the valves adjusted too.... First service.... But I disagree about factory approved genuine mechanics are required to do your first scheduled maintenance... Void your warranty and all.... Just keep your records and receipts for your oil and filter. Maybe video document your valves adjusts.... I doubt your warranty will get voided if you DIY...
good luck

I'm going to be doing my own 500 mile service as well as it's really not that complicated. Plus the way things are going, I'm going to hit 2000 miles by January :D

Here's Genuine's official video on what all needs to be done: http://vimeo.com/20618680

The hardest part for me right now is finding an oil filter. I posted another thread about it and I've been checking on the internet but am coming up blank.

Jason.... that genuine video that you linked us to.. is NOT a 500 mile check vid...
It's a Dealer Prep video so their dealers can correctly set up a bike before delivering it to you and me..

BUT.... at the 1:34 sec mark is the info that you want reguarding where your oil filter is...

he says... in part...
> ive removed the rear wheel"....."and there is the oil filter cover held in place with 4 X 10 mm bolts////"

fast forward to the 6:30 second mark for more details regarding the oil filter change

so there you go.. take off the back wheel.. go after the oil filter from the battery side of the bike...
BEWARE the 0-ring when r=installing your new filter..
make sure the 0-ring is in position and stays there when you pop the cover back on and button up....
good luck..

They titled the video: "4-Stroke Stella 500 Mile Check Up." Is there some tasks missing from the video?

Also, what I meant by having trouble finding an oil filter is that I can't find one to buy. None of my local shops have it and scooterworks is sold out. Seems like someone somewhere would have some in stock.

Don't feel bad, I'd rather be 100% sure on something then just plow forward in ignorance.

I'll give maplewood a ring. Thanks for the tip!

Since we're on topic of 500 mile service, I am curious if its a problem to take mine in at 400 miles. I am at just about 400 miles and the horn has started beeping when I downshift and it's bugging the crap out of me, so I just want to take it in and have the service done and have them fix the beeping as well. Is it essential that I way until 500 miles for the first service?

Well, I was told to have it in for a 300 mile service. The owners manual says "500-750 KM Service" That means it's between 300-466 miles.

You're within that window now.

Jason,

Yeah, per the manual, I definitely agree with you, but everyone says 500 mile service, so I just wasn't sure if there was some veteran wisdom here that may not be in the Owner's Manual, :nerd:

I don't know how far along you are to the first service interval (do use the KM interval, not miles) but I'd strongly recommend changing the oil yourself at about 200 miles and cleaning the strainer. I'd also insist that the dealer (who really should do your initial scheduled service) change the oil filter when he services the scoot. The oil filter change is not on the schedule until the second scheduled service but, given what came out of my crankcase when I changed my oil at 200 miles, I'd have the dealer do the filter too at the initial service.
