Side Stands

Post by Wolfhound »

I am going to install a side stand on my 2012 Stella 4T. Dont have a lift but
is it possible to lay it on its side, using moving quilts for protection, and remove the center stand? My dealer says to remove the center stand,
and install the side stand first and then install the center stand back on top of the side stand mounting plate. Will this work? :?

In the Modern Buddy forum titled "Changing tires wasn't so bad" it is recommended that to change a flat rear tire while on the road that you lay the bike on its side. There have been no subsequent posts decrying that practice so I assume that this is not a terribly bad idea. Note that in the picture the rider wisely removed both cowls to prevent dents and scratches.

When you are done with your installation would you mind posting a picture of the under-scooter mechanicals showing exactly how you mounted the side stand... and let us know the brand side stand you purchased? Thank you.

Seriously?!? I thought some folks carried a 7-inch chunk of 2x4 to prop up the engine when removing the rear wheel. :)

I would think maybe you could get away with tipping a 2T, but where is the evap canister and stuff on the 4T, and would tipping it onto the right side flood the emissions system?

I use the 2x4 at home but I would totally tip the bike on its side to change a tire or mount a stand. I wouldn't do it on concrete/asphalt tho, and surely wouldn't take the cowl off and have the engine support the weight.

WH, I have seen that one and if I try that I will do it in my garage and as said, and put two moving mats underneath it to prevent damage. I will post
pix once my wife shows me how. I are compooter illitrate!!! It is a model ACC 2948 and bought from my dealer, Vespa Marietta, Marietta, GA. I
think that Scooterworks carries them also. Mine is also marked SSC1 Sidestand Stella. It cost $49.95
Lokky, agreed. Pete, you make a good point about the emissions canister.
I will look into that further.
I may just go ahead and buy a motorcycle lift from Harbor Freight if my
local dealer has in stock. Might be my best bet in the long run. The old knees dont like to get up and down!!
Thanks all for your input.

My Stella 4T was once on its side for a few minutes, not intentionally, and it definitely flooded. Maybe if you turn the fuel petcock to the off position this could be avoided, but I'm not sure.

Thanks. I am considering a few different approaches including just saying the heck with it and letting my dealer do the job when it gets its first 500 mile
tune up. Did get down on the floor and examined the center stand. I was surprised to see that it is held in place by 4 very small bolts and lock washers and nuts. Hardly looks strong enough to handle the work load but it does. If I do it the way my dealer says I will have to get longer bolts. I am going to take my time but will get it installed one way or another. :!:

I leaned mine up against a wall and worked on it from the side/layed on the ground to do the install. Wasn't too bad.

Wolfhound, posting a picture on a forum like this is not so bad once you have done it once or twice. I typed up a comprehensive step-by-step set of instructions for doing just that on another forum I use called HalifaxTalk. Except for the name of the forum all of the instructions should apply. I tried to approach the subject from the computer novice point of view. Take a look HERE. You can do it. Note: When you are reading the instructions, simply replace the word HalifaxTalk with ModernBuddy.

Thanks, WH and Magneto for good advise. I am printing out the pix posting info and had thought of doing it the way you did, Magneto. Did you use
longer bolts?
