Engine braking with a 4T

Post by Stilts »

I know that engine braking with a 2T isn't advisable, but what about in the 4T motors?

Not only beneficial in general riding to control speed and ready yourself for immediate acceleration but necessary for a proper top end brake in.

I've never heard of engine braking being bad for 2T motors, I have broken in two different 2T Stella and rode them hard for thousands of miles each, the engine never gave me any trouble and I constantly engine brake.

The theory I have heard as to why this is bad for 2T is that when you are engine braking you are not adding the normal amount of gas/oil mix as you would cruising at that RPM so there is a lack of oil causing issues. Fact or Myth i have no idea.

I've heard the same thing. If it's a myth, it's certainly a prevalent one.

So what I'm getting out of this is that, provided I match engine speed to road speed while downshifting, I'm not going to break the crank or anything.

I'm more concerned for my own posterior should I do anything to the scoot because my wife will kill me. ;)
