New Speedo cable install

Post by saturnphive »

Hey Everyone,

About a month into owning my new-to-me 2007 stella (2t, 10k miles) the speedo cable snapped. I replaced it last night and honestly, it couldn't have gone smoother. About a 20-30 minute job, with a trip to O'Reily's for some grease. But I'm looking for some verification.

Should I have greased the cable before installing it? I did, I'm just wondering if that was right.

Also, it works, but it seems to take a while to slow down - like I'm almost at a stop sign and its still dropping down, showing say, 15 or so before I come to a complete stop. "Lag" I might call it. Does the stella speedo usually lag behind? I can't remember from before.

Thanks!

Yes, but it's best to use one that does not get thick in cold weather. Google cable lubrication and you can read about various types.

Also do not over-grease or allow grease to build up at the speedo end of the cable as you insert it because the grease can interfere with the operation of the speedometer if it "rides up" the cable as it spins to the extent that it works into the instrument.

The needle 'Lag' you describe.....I have driven two Stellas, mine and a friends.
Both display the behaviour you describe.
