2009 Stella 150 two stroke

Post by jsm »

Really like my ET2, but I've been looking at different scooters to replace it. Found a 2009 Stella 150 two stroke with low miles, so low that I figure there'll be issues because it sat for so long. Anything major to look out for with this model?

If it's been sitting I'd get the fluids checked, check to see if the rubber and tires aren't cracked, and ride it to see how it feels...Good luck!

Yeah, thanks. Besides that, no known issues for that year and model? Want a two stroke with a kick start, thinking the roughhouse would be good too and maybe more reliable?

Not that I know of although some have said they have had crank/bearing issues but I chalk that up too the guys who have kitted the engine for more cc. If left stock I think it'll be fine...

Personally, I'd peruse this thread before I made the purchase.

Good luck whatever you decide!

Saw that thread, seem like one bad issue with the crank then it goes to a whole lot of opinions about all kinds of things, just like all forums. Was hoping for owners opinions.

So, are you wanting to go for a shifty or a CVT?

Fun bike, crank life is spotty on the 09. Seems like the bearing issue shows up before it hits 2500 miles. It wasn't all of them, just a few.

The Stella is still my favorite two wheeler. It is never boring.
"Stella" is Latin for "use threadlocker on all fasteners"

Fair enough. Since you are more likely to find Stella owners in the Stella Forum, I'm moving this thread there. Again, good luck.

Anything major to look out for with this model?
For the 2009 2Ts .......

1) there's a significant number of 2009s that had issues with the 2T oil check valve in the carb. It doesn't seat correctly and so at rest, the 2T oil siphons from the oil tank into the carb & results in massive smoking at startup and 2T oil everywhere. Solution is to replace the carb & check valve. These were repaired under warranty for the original owner.

2) Usual issue with the kill switch when they get wet. Solution is to remove the horn-cast and disconnect the wire's connector.

3) Usual issue with loose wire attachment screws at the headlight dipswitch. Solution is to loosen the switch to expose the connector screws and tighten them up.

4) Usual issue with wheel lugs/nuts galling. Solution is to remove the lug nuts one at a time, smear some anti-seeze on the threads and then replace the nuts with proper torque.

5) The crank bearing issue is seriously complicated and will generate a lot of in-fighting & disagreements. However, if you install a replacement exhaust & filter you'll need to up-jet to provide the necessary additional raw fuel for the proper fuel-air mix necessary with those changes.

Before you change anything, do 2 things. First install a CHT and record your stock temperatures at various ride locations. When you up-jet, do so to replicate these temps.

Second, talk to some unbiased (meaning not Stella) 2-stroke motor heads and ask them about up-jetting an engine with an auto-lube.

Explain that you're up-jetting to them and ask them if they'd recommend either A) just relying on the stock auto-lube to continue providing sufficient oil or B) also start using a partial pre-mix to augment the auto-lube in providing the necessary oil for the increased flow of raw fuel from the larger jets.

I'm not recommending either cause I don't want to start a storm, I'm just suggesting that you ask that question to some unbiased 2-stroke motorcycle mechanics before you do any exhaust or filter changes.

Ive had 2 friends with 09 stellas
And both were stung with fisher1's number 1...
Oil check valve...
It seemed to work fine untill you filled it too far.
Keep the oil level about half a quart..and aok then
Good luck
