New Owner Stella GB150 Cluch cable broke ?

Greetings all - I picked up a Stella GB150 recently.

I've been riding it, and really enjoying the torque and feel over my Honda 150.

Yesterday while riding home, the cable seemly snapped. I had difficulty putting her in gear, and then boom.... Loosey cable lever.

What I find odd is that I was able to twist the handle and still shift although the lever was loose. I got her home, and put her in the garage until I get the parts I need to fix her up.

Can anyone explain to me why I could still shift out without the lever? Was the cable broken actually?

The clutch isn't required for shifting especially the higher gears. It just makes shifting smoother and keeps you from stalling when shifting into first from a stop.

Also, if you don't already have one, purchase a "4th Hand Tool", also known as a cable puller/stretcher.

How then does the gears change if there isn't a cable connected? Which leads me to the question - why the clutch then?

The clutch and shifter have separate cables. The clutch is to make shifting easier and smoother. Shifting without the clutch smoothly takes a bit to master, otherwise it's pretty jerky and loud. Also possible to break something in the transmission if you do it horribly wrong.

They're worth it. Can even use 'em on the old Vespa cable-operated drum front brakes with better results.

As you have learned you can shift without a clutch in an emergency...but it is better to use it. When not using it the gears don't engage so much as collide. It's rough on components like the cush, clutch, cruciform etc.

Are you sure you broke the cable? My 4T did the same thing the first week I had her home. Turned out the adjustment nuts on the shift cable just weren't tight enough. I torqued those down and it has been fine since.

I too have upgraded, downgraded, sidegraded, regraded from my first scoot, a Vespa LX150 to a Stella. And luck be a lady, the one available was a 2T Stella BGB150 with 2350 miles on it. #013 Lucky!

Let me know what toys I will need. Noted the cable free hand is on the to-do list.
