Value 1995 Stella

Post by rlmoss »

My first post. In downtown DC, a 1995 Stella bore sign "Call if interested." About 4500 on speedometer. Some chrome accessories. Does anyone have a notion of price range? Edmunds noted $2400 with caveats, average dealer price.

Anything I should look for when I see it? For example, re my Kawasaki KLR 650 (dual sport) there were known adjustments or settings or parts that tended to have a shorter MTF (mean time to failure) compared to average. I think cylinder clearances, but I had the KLR in 2005/6, so drawing on memory.

Many thanks,

Was there a 1995 Stella? I thought the brand originated in 2003 or thereabouts.

Yeah, it came out in the early 2000s. If it's an older LML, it probably isn't legally imported. I'm betting more likely it's a mislabeled (or misremembered) 2005

The quality varies a bit, but it's hard to pinpoint by model year. LML, the manufacuturer, had some labor disputes and actually shut down for about a year, so that probably didn't help. In most cases, if a problem was likely, it manifested itself within the warranty period. There were some bad cranks in there, stuff like that. If it's been sitting unridden for a long time, that's a whole 'nother set of problems, that's the worst thing that can happen to a scooter, ha. Low-mileage scooters are usually bad news. If it's got reasonably high mileage and all the electrics work, but if it's been ridden consistently since new and hasn't had any problems, or if early problems have been repaired, the bike's probably a good bet.

I'd say that price is a bit high unless it's in great condition and has no issues at all.

2 Stroke Buzz, thanks. You're right: either my typo or memory. Scanning classifieds at modernbuddy, I see better values at $2,400/$2,500. As I remember, more likely 2007-2009, but it was a very hurried scan and it may be that not all were Stella.

Checked Genuine & a new Stella 2-stroke is MSR $3,600. He's proposing very gentle depreciation curve--at 1/3 off in 5 years. When my year old KLR was stolen, insurer's first offer was also 1/3 down from purchase price. Very long negotiation to bump it up.

Thanks,

Richard

New (08 and 09) have dropped in price to around $2600. Check with your local dealer and you might be able to get a new one cheaper than one that's only a couple years old.

Geez, I just found a dealer in UTAH blowing out brand new Stellas for $2159! That is the lowest I have ever seen a dealer advertise. Here is the contact info:

Salt Lake Scooter Co
1225 South Major St(35 east)
SLC Ut 84111
801 532 2433

Wish I could buy a few.
