I don't get it -- Why not just have ONE tank that is bigger?

Fuel gauge is just a guide, and is in my experience, faulty. In case of low fuel levels, the reserve gives you just enough to find petrol.
I use the look and shake method of checking my fuel level, but I will turn the lever to reserve if I am worried about running out on the main tank before getting fuel. You do not want to run out of mix when at full rpm, it could damage your top end.

actualy you still only have one tank
what the reserve does when you flip it is let you pull from a lower point in the tank
like was said the fuel guage in the stella isnt very reliable or accurate
heck even on my xs1100 i have had to use the reserve and the brother inlaw has used it on his hog when we have been out on rides

Correct, the tap just pulls from lower in the tank when on Reserve. The only other tank you have is of course your 2t oil reservoir.

The original Vespa scooters didn't have a gas gauge. So the reserve was a way to insure you didn't run out of gas. I think this is just a carry over from the old days. You also need to take into consideration that the gas gauge on Stellas in not a good indicator of how much gas is in the tank; you may have noticed the "needle is always floating "back & fourth on the gauge. It makes one feel more secure to know that if you run out of gas, you still have enough to get more gas.
