The Smoke

Finally got a decent day to take a ride on my 09 Stella with 75 miles on it. Haven't started it in about two weeks. Started immediately, but the smoke was huge. I did not leave out the choke but for a few seconds to get it started. Went about 10 miles, parked it for about an hour and decided to go for another ride. Started immediately but no smoke at all. Should I be closing the fuel shut off when not in use. Why so much smoke today at a cold start?

Yes, close the tap when you turn off, otherwise it may flood the engine depending on the condition of our carb and tap. Some people leave it on all the time, but they probably ride regularly. The smoke was probably the excess burning off after sitting for so long with the tap open.

Did you have SeaFoam or some other fuel additive in it? Very often, after sitting for several weeks or months, fuel with additives will give off dramatic clouds of smoke. Dandy fun!

My Polaris Xplorer 4WD (2T) has a nasty habit of smoking like a bandit after setting for a few months.

Dunno why.

A few WOT runs clears it out though.

Started today after having closed the shut off overnite and pretty smokeless. I think I'll be closing the shut off when not in use.

Yup, as per owner's manual.

Ah, Thanks. Flooding from heat expansion in the Gas tank, I presume?

... or a carburetor float bowl needle valve that isn't working quite right.
