Bonus screw?

Post by Maximus53 »

Hello scooter genuises! I found this screw laying on the left floorboard of my new 4T Stella this morning. I cant figure out where it came from or where it goes. I did have some warranty work done yesterday (new speedo and indicator switch) so maybe the dealer left me a bonus? :? This is a brass philllips head screw with washer.

Thanks in advance for your wonderful advice!

That was it! Do these two screws hold the speedo in? The other one was one bump away from falling out as well...

They hold the plastic top of the headset, which in turn holds the instrument cluster. TBH I have seen them on the floor more times than I care to count after the dealer had gone through the headset, it's just a piece that needs to be tightened with a little extra care.

Check other bolts and screws around your bike to make sure that they are correctly torqued.

That was the first thing I did after I found the second loose screw. I the plus side I found out first hand how crappy the screwdriver was that was included in the Stella tool kit. It has now been replaced with a couple decent ones.

If you're concerned with the lackluster tool kit, a quick trip to your local Harbor Freight can net you a nice tool roll and a fine set of metric wrenches, needle vice grips (great for cables!) a few screwdrivers and a spark plug socket for less than $30. If you have a bit more scratch, I believe Snap-On makes a "Bike Kit" that fits in a small plastic case. Of course, Snap-On will cost ya, but depends on what you dig.

Either way, a full compliment of basic tools is easy to stash in the Stella's cavernous glovebox. I suggest it especially if you have a 4 stroke and don't have a liter of 2T oil taking up space in it like many of us old Stella owners :P

But 4T owners (me anyway) have a liter of gas in the glove box, . It's a necessity with the evap hobbled gas tank, and the goofy reserve that is actually MOST of the functional tank. I can't bring myself to do the mod on that thing, it's my kneejerk "tree hugger" feelings probably..

Thats funny you mention the reserve tank. I have headed straight to the gas station as soon as i have to flip to reserve and the most i have been able to put in the tank is 0.8 gallons. so i still have half a gallon of gas left? Im too much of a wuss to push it and see how far i can go on reserve since i dont want to have to push to the gas station....

That's why I bought the fuel bottle. Now I feel ok to just go ahead and ride on that reserve. Others have reported just going 'about a hundred miles' before fueling up, but I'm not good at remembering what the mileage was when I last fueled up.
