Gear oil smells of gas

I just changed my gear oil, it had been a year since I bought it and had not changed it since. It's a 2004 Stella and I have been experiencing some problems lately so I thought I'd fix what I can before I have it looked at. The oil was dark, and smelled pretty strongly of gas. Is this normal? It also leaks oil pretty badly ( about a quarter sized pool every time I ride). Anyhow, any suggestions are welcome, thanks!

The common answer for fuel in the tranny oil is a bad clutch side seal. I'd rule anything else out before tearing the motor down to fix it.

I can't really tell you what else to look for though, since I don't know another reasonable way fuel would get into the oil. Others here may be able to help.

If it were me, I'd change the oil, ride it, then check the oil for fuel again. If you're having high idle or odd running issues, it could be due to an air leak through the seal and I'd get it fixed soon.

I agree with the above post. Clutch side seal.Good advice on double checking.

Ethanol sucks!

It's a small cheap part...unfortunately...you have to dissemble the majority of the motor to get to it.

If you're going to change it might as well take care of the fly seal, change out the cruciform and think about an upgraded crank.

Exactly what I was looking for, but not what I wanted to hear. I just put in the scooterworks little bottle of ipone tranny oil (is 125ml enough for a double
check?) so I'll ride it a bit and redo. You guys rock, love this forum!
