LED Lights on Stella

Post by gtlsoccer11 »

So I had a little spare time today and decided to finally install those LED lights I bought for my Stella. Here I will show you how I did it to give ideas and show how easy it was.

Materials:
Screwdrivers
Wire
LED
Wire connectors
Two hangers
Cable stripper
Alcohol of choice/Coke for those under age.[/b] :P

1.- Take apart the cowbells, and remove the front part of the stella. (3 screws, one is behind the genuine logo)

2.- Take apart the head light cover.

3.- Attach both hangers together and run them thru the bottom of the Stella as shown in pictures. Pull the hangers out once the wire is attach to the other end.

4.- Place light in desired place and attach to wire that you ran thru the Stella using the cable connectors.

5.- Drink something cold. :D (this step is essential, repeat as needed)

6.- Remove head light cover. Attach two pieces of wire, one to the negative cable on light bulb and the other to the purple cable. (That is the cable for the high light. Meaning, lights will only turn on when you turn the high light on.) Run two pieces of wire down to the front of the Stella thru the inside where all the cables go thru. This takes a little time.

7.- Attach all your positives together. All your negatives together. Secure your conectors. Try them on before assembling back all you pieces.

8.- Test the lights inside your garage if you can't wait for the night. Test that cables that are not in the way. Take your baby out for a spin around the block to show off your new lights.

9.- Repeat step number "5" with a victory dance and some good music.

Any person that needs help or planning on doing this. If on the San Antonio area, send me an e-mail.

Great write up! Useful for anyone wanting to wire anything into the Stella!

I'll be adding a 12v plug eventually.

pretty cool.

what would be super cool is a video of those ground LEDs running outside.

love the DIY tips, really appreciate the insight as I'm willing, but not terribly knowledgeable.

cheers.

I've searched all over and can't seem to find the thread to replace the all of the bulbs on the bike with LEDs.
Has anyone seen this?

I can see about writing up something next weekend, I'm planning to swap out my turn signals with LED's.

Dunno if you could do all the lights, Especially those little bulbs in the Speedometer.

And I don't think a LED Headlight would be safe.

Yeah, the headlight I would leave. But the turn signals and break light would be better off with LEDs. Also I noticed that the light isolation in the speedometer could be better. I was hoping to disassemble it, replace the bulbs with brighter LEDs and try to close the gaps in the walls with Sugru.

I've posted about LED turn signals elsewhere, but here's a new youtube clip I did comparing stock and LED towers in the 4t:

There's really no problem swapping them out with the stock bulbs. Having just done the rear turn signals, it doesn't seem to the load/timing/etc. Easy peasy.

Bulb is SMT 60 Type 7507 from autolumination.

As an added measure of safety, you might consider adding some sort of protective sheathing on your wires to avoid having them chafe against anything that could damage the insulation and cause a short. Here are a couple links to products that work well and look good on the scooter:

TechFlex Clean Cut Mesh:

You can get this in 25' sections on eBay pretty cheap.

OEM Style Black Harness Sleeve:

Also, always be sure to add an inline fuse to any connections that will be attached directly to the battery or an unfused circuit.
