Down Shifting issues

Post by Riluske »

I've been riding my Stella 4T for a while now without to many issues (other than some at the beginning of owning her). Got my 500 mile maintenance, everything looked great. I'm now around 950 miles.

However, I have recently started having some issues getting from third to second, and then second to neutral. For some reason, my Stella has been wanting to skip second to neutral when I down shift, and when I'm in second, it's near impossible to get it into neutral. It becomes a problem at stop lights. I can usually mess with it to get it into first, and then I just clutch until the light turns green. Once or twice I've had to start going while still in second, which is no fun.

I have noticed that if I cut the engine off, I can usually get it from second to neutral, although this is probably really bad on the transmission.

Any ideas? Is there something I can lube, or some fluid I can add that might help with things? Thanks so much!

Sounds like a selector box issue. Your cables probably just need some adjusting Easy peasy!

^Yup.

Your cables are a bit like guitar strings. New strings go out of tune all the time, because they need to stretch and relax. As your cables do this, the tensions need adjusting, kind of like tuning the guitar.

I have yet to learn how to do this (though it's at the top of my list) but I have my shop check them wen I bring my Stella in. There are many online tutorials and videos that teach cable adjustment, though,.

I just had the same issue on my Stella. It was difficult to shift into first or second. They tightened the cable at the shop and it works great now. The mechanic said that it was an easy fix and that he has done it on the side of the road multiple times. He also mentioned the importance of keeping the cable lubed so it can move easily.

Apparently it was caused by me forcing it into gear while at a stop, instead of rolling forward a little to ease the shift.
