Stella 4T speed and modification

ATTENTION Stella owners!...Official testing results. There is a little "testing course" we have for testing scooters; complete with a straight away that comes under a bridge. Test was performed with a 250lb. rider in 65 degree weather; speeds are coming under the bridge and test should be fairly scientific.

Stock 4t Stella : 54 MPH
Stella 4T with Pinasco pipe and carb : 58 MPH
Stella 4T with Pipe, carb and windscreen : 62 MPH
Stella with pipe, carb, windscreen and carb tuning :65 MPH

Yes, the windscreen on a Stella is worth 4-5 MPH!!!! ( small 17" model)

All done on the same day, same rider and opened the throttle in 4th at the same speed, same spot, same bike. This was "indicated" MPH and I did not GPS the speedo to see how accurate.

Are your standard 4t scooters 150cc like the 2t's or are they 125's ?

In the U.S. they are 150's. The Stella dosen't come in 125 over here. Depending on the model you could get a 125cc though. Buddies are one model you can get that comes in a 125cc....

The 165 is well worth the money according to everyone I have spoken to that has fitted one,although one guy who has done about 15,000 miles has just suffered what sounds like crank failure.

Polini have just come up with a whole load of goodies for the 200

Are they ever going to bring them out over there ? Is there any reason why they wouldn't ?

The 200 injection should be out at some point next year as well as the automatic Stella.

Here's all the bhp and torque stats for the different models.

200 4t - 11.5bhp and 14.5 Nm
125 4t - 8bhp and 9.15 Nm
150 4t - 9bhp and 11.54 Nm

125 2t - 6.3bhp and 9.5 Nm
150 2t - 7.7bhp and 13.5 Nm

Im not sure if it is the same across the pond but over here we can ask a dealer to get a specific model/special edition/colour shipped over from LML Italia.

Im not sure how much extra it costs but it can be done.

Yeah, we have about 7 color choices. That's it. Nothing that crazy. The bi color purple one is amazing, my daughter wants it.

If they don't bring the 200 Stateside, a 165 kit -- and if appropriate, an upgear kit -- might suffice for my needs. Although my luck is such that I'd get one and have the mods completed just as Genuine announces they'll be importing the 200s.

Basically, I'd be satisfied with acceleration and top-end speed equivalent to a Vespa LX 150.

Just installed the small cuppini windshield *on my 2t Stella {sorry for the edit}*. I gained 3-5 mph (it's windy today, and it was difficult to make a run with no headwind). Top speed on a slight downhill was 70mph

I matched my speedo up with my GPS before, and it was just about dead on at 50mph, so the indicated speed is relatively close.

Crap, I figured this was a 4T speed thread. Missed that he's running a smoker too.

I figure it'll do fine as a 2T. I've had my P200E to 75mph (actual speed, smooth asphalt, no wind) and I've had Howardr's stroker Malossi 175cc to 65mph (actual speed, wind be damned).

D'oh. Got sidetracked and forgot to mention that. I was agreeing with viney266 that the windshield adds top end. Seems counter intuitive , but it works.

As far as handling- not too bad. There is no death wobble or anything.

Sadly, no. The engine would have to be certified for sale here. Even registering one someone had shipped over would be pretty difficult, though it can be done.

I'm still ambivalent about whether a 200cc Stella would in fact be a good seller here in the US. Sure, most of US think it's a great idea, but the sales appeal—especially to first time buyers—would have to be a lot broader and may not be enough to justify the cost of certifying and importing a new model when there are others on the horizon. The automatic Stella, for instance, could fare much better if the price is right—regardless of any of our opinions on such a model.

Eric, I don't think displacement was the desired trait, but rather the color.

It would be cool if Genuine offered some of those cool color combos. Maybe it's time for a slick 4T special.

Something interesting I heard from a mechanic at a Genuine dealer: Unlike owners of many other models, they've had no Stella owners come back and ask about performance modifications for their Stella 4Ts. I get the impression that the average buyer—around here at least—is interested in the style, nostalgia, etc. but not buying for performance.

While I'd consider some mods to give me some more off the line acceleration and better hill climbing power, I don't know if I'd go to the lengths and expense I have with my LX. At the end of it all, I'd still have a Stella 4T that wasn't quite in the next class of bikes, meaning big and fast enough for local freeways. Windscreen comes first, then maybe change out the gear set.

Stella: It's not the destination (or how long it takes to get there), it's the journey.
