2100 miles and 2T oil is coming out exhaust.
I've got a 2009 2T that I purchased this spring new from the local dealer. I've just hit 2200 miles on it
I've done over 2100 miles this summer with out a drop of oil out the exhaust. In the past week/100 miles since it has turned colder I've noticed oil on the floorboard. I removed the left cowl and there was oil inside it also. I crawled around underneath and confirmed it was 2T oil that has to be coming out of the pipe (tip of pipe is oily and the oil is the same color as the 2T oil I am using). It's not a lot of oil but enough that I noticed it.
Yesterday when I went to run a few errands I noticed that there was a small stain on the garage floor under the pipe. When I went out to the garage today there was a second stain on the floor.
The only thing I have done differently in the past couple weeks is I had to ride in the rain twice, other than that I have been riding the same roads, same speeds, and the same 2T oil. I haven't yet messed with the mixture screw to richen it up for the winter (was going to give it a half turn counter-clockwise once the weather started staying cooler).
What has me worried it that all summer long there was no oil coming out of the exhaust, and now there is. I had just ordered a new pipe, air filter and jets, but I am going to hold of on installing them until I figure out why the oil is only making an appearance now.
Could it have something to do with the colder weather? Is it even something I should be worried about?
Thanks

The odds are it is the cooler weather.
The unburned oil, that which is burned and boiled away in the exaust, is likely condensing to the walls of the, now operating much cooler, muffler.
So now it gets carried out with the exaust gasses and thrown on the machine (and everywhere else) because of the air turbulence around the moving machine.
If you were to take a longish higher speed ride, say on the order of 40 to 45 mph for up to ten minutes at a time.....this for an hour or so, it would likely dry out the system and you'd be good for a few days.
Then, after several short trips, it would start spitting the goo again.
Based on your description, I doubt if there is much more to it.

Out of curiousity, how much oil are you putting in the autolube tank?
Word has it that filling the oil tank and going up into the standpipe causes excessive smokiness and oily exhaust.

At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...
Seriously...I've lost count...
Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...

Hmmm, it has been after short trips to get daughter from school 10 minutes max each way. I'll have to go for a longer ride and see what happens.
I add 8oz of oil when the site glass has air in it, the same procedure I have done all summer long... I am pretty sure i haven't been over filling it since I've read people are putting almost a quart in when they see air. Yes I fill it more often, but I carry the small 8oz container in the glove box so it's always handy.
Thanks.

Shine a flashlight down the standpipe. If the oil level is up in the standpipe or just at the base of the standpipe, then you'll possibly get some leakage. Adding a full quart at the first hint of a bubble in the sight glass can take the level into the standpipe. Especially if the bubble is only apparrent when the scoot is on the centerstand and the front of the scoot raised.I add 8oz of oil when the site glass has air in it, the same procedure I have done all summer long... Since it has been raining for the last week, my scooter hasn't moved for over a week. When I parked it last there was just barely a bubble showing in the oil glass, today when I went out to the garage there was a large pool of oil underneath the scooter and the oil glass was half empty. So I am sure there is a leak.
The scooter is still under warranty, but I know the way that Genuine works the warranty is the shop has to get approval to do warranty work. I am thinking the dealer is going to have to pull the tank to inspect and submit it, then have me return to do the work once they get approval. Is the dealer going to be able to submit the labor costs to pull the tank the first time, or will I have to foot that bill? If I am going to have to pay for the first trip, would I be better off just pulling the tank myself and doing the repairs?

The dealer will call Genuine with their findings, while it is apart.JBenjimin wrote:Since it has been raining for the last week, my scooter hasn't moved for over a week. They will recieve authorization at that time.......the dealer is not asked to reassemble just to take it apart a second time.

Thanks for the reply.Robbie wrote:The dealer will call Genuine with their findings, while it is apart.

When I needed my brake rotor replaced it took about a month for the warranty approved part to get to the dealer, they were able to diagnose it with out dis-assembly, so I was able to ride the scooter while waiting for the part. But for the oil tank they are going to have to disassemble it, and if they are not going to reassemble, then the scooter is going to be at the dealer while they wait for the warranty part. Correct?
Even though it is cold, I still ride, I just haven't in the past week since I had no where I had to be, and it was raining (if I have to go somewhere rain doesn't stop me, but I don't just go riding for the fun of it in the rain). I can't imagine my scooter not being here for a month. I wonder if the dealer would let me visit it every so often?
Edit:
And of course the dealer is closed today so I can't call and ask anything.
