Stella w/sidecar tire life

Post by longroof »

My first post! Been thinking about a Stella/sidecar combination for over a year now. Close to retirement (425 days but who is counting). Will probably tour on my Nivara Buzz bicycle for a year then would like to take a Stella/sidecar trip the folowing year. Going from an average of 14 MPH to the astromical speed of perhaps 40+ something MPH will be quite a change for me.

Back in the '70's a friend of mine had a Vespa dealership and I would sometimes borrow one of his scooters. My favorite was one was with a sidecar. Last year drove a Ural 2WD sidecar and scared the wife silly a few times before I adjusted to that third wheel.

Besides the bicycle I've been touring on a Yamaha TW200 for the past 9 years closing in on 48,000+ miles with it (see www.tw200forum.com ).

Anyway what kind of tread mileage can I expect with a properly set-up rig with a 190 lb driver and say 80+ pounds of gear in the hack? I'm into geology so this weight will probably increase as I collect samples.

Thank you

I'd say the sidecar reduces the life of the rear tire by 30% or more depending on how you ride. The hack seems to have only a minor effect on front tire mileage, and the sidecar tire will probably last as long as you own the rig. Tire life on the rear tire of a scooter is not very impressive even without a hack for that matter.
