So the other night I hit a pothole and I noticed that for the rest of my ride home (about 25 miles) my exhaust was a bit louder. I checked under this morning before I went out and I discovered that I cracked my exhaust.
Should I just take it to someone and get it patched up with a quick weld or should I just upgrade my exhaust system all together?
I've read around and a good upgrade is around $500-$700.
I just wanted to get some opinions from the group I trust
Side notes: I would like more power if at all possible but I can't afford a $500 upgrade right now. It is my daily which means I ride it approximately 300 miles a week (from Tustin to Brea and back).
If it's still under warranty, Genuine should cover it, others here have had the same problem. Also, if its under warranty, upgrading the exhaust will void the warranty.
if you dont want to be without your bike for long.... just remove the muffler yourself...
( easy.... just 2 bolts at the head and one big bolt just north of the r/tire.)
the first part of post #1 should help you to remove your pipe.
the muffler will drop right down...
then carry it to the nearest muffler shop and offer them a $20 to weld it up..
Carry it back home and put it back on...
Back on the road with little down time and cheap..
Not as cheap as a FREE warranty deal.. but much less time sitting at the dealer..
Time is money to some folks
just a suggestion
good luck

I went to O'reilly today and asked the manager about temporary exhaust fix and he mentioned that if i get it tack welded temporarily (until i can get it into the shop to get the exhaust replaced) it may void my warranty?
what do you guys think?
so i just bought some metal exhaust tape and some metal hose clamps in the mean time.
Im not an expert on genuine s warranty..(maybe the O'reilly's manager is onto something)
BUT, If you are worried about voiding..
You better play it safe... and just drop it off at the dealer.
good luck....
Genuine will warranty it... I'm about to get mine replaced for the 5th time under warranty... it keeps cracking at the first bend...
I have a spare though, one that broke at the center mount... it took so long for a new muffler to come in from India that they paid to have a local shop weld it until the new one finally arrived... the dealer let me keep it as a spare...
so now when my exhaust cracks I swap on the spare, call the dealer to have a new one installed, then take it in when they actually get new one in the shop...
once my warranty runs out I'm just going to get a performance exhaust...

it ended up cracking completely through. so i had to take it to a spot on my lunch break to get it welded. only problem is it's only welded about 2/3. i had to wrap it with aluminum exhaust wrap and use one of those ties to hold it on.
hopefully my local shop will let me hold on to the broken one.
Before
After
i almost want to just get a performance exhaust now and just put the OEM one on when i need warranty work.[/img]
I guess it comes down to a question about out of pocket expenses. You want to get it fixed under warranty (free).... Or remove it.... Take it to a muffler shop and pay then 30 to weld it properly..... Or pay close to 400$ for a performance pipe which may void your warranty..... Decisions decisions...
Good luck.
400 bucks for a performance pipe?! That's nuts. You can get a Sito+ or SIP road/SIP road sport for 1/4 that. You get increased performance across the entre powerband for minimal effort/modification (just two bolts and rejetting) and low cost. Best bang for the buck for the Stella. It doesn't need to have an enormous expansion chamber to be a performance exhaust. Just my two cents.

ha! that's what I did with my last one that also broke all the way through... thought I could hold it together with some aluminum and hose clamps... it didn't last at all... but yours looks better than mine did...
last time I had mine replaced the dealer said that sometimes Genuine will want the part back to ensure it's a warranty issue and not that you hit a curb or something like that... just ask your dealer if you can keep it as a spare since you've read about this being a recurring problem...
Whoops, yeah you are correct and I'm an idiot. I think were it me I'd go back to stock. 1/7th your original investment is a lot to ask for an exhaust. I still stand by my belief that 4-500 bucks for an exhaust is nuts.
Has anyone tried foil tape? It's kind of like duct tape, but with foil. I use it for taping dryer venting together. You can find it at the ducting dept. at Home Depot.

The warranty won't cover it if it was damaged by a pothole.

anyone know if the Pride of Cleveland POC pipe for the 4 stroke Bajaj would work for a 4t Stella? They're a touch hard to come by but when they do pop up they're usually about 250-300 bucks. May be worth looking into if they'll work.

A POC Bajaj pipe comes very close to bolting up, but the flange is wrong. You'd need to remove the flange retaining ring (grinder required) from the downpipe and swap the flange at bare minimum.
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

i just dropped it off. the guy at the shop got it covered by warranty.
the pothole didn't hit any metal, it just jolted me enough to crack the pipe further. and since this is reported to be a common thing, would i need to change anything if i got a lesser expensive exhaust upgrade?
the plan is: if this happens again, i'll have the upgrade to throw on while i wait for the warranty repair.
so keep a spare handy so i'm not out of my only solid transportation to work.
do if i do that, will i need to tune anything if i swap the pipe?
