Standing on a corner in Winslow, AZ
Actually, I was standing on a corner in Agoura Hills.
Shifter started freely turning and wouldn't actually change gears. Happened at mile 160 on the dot.
Hanging out now at local dealer, sitting in a Rhino parked outside waiting to be picked up.
Could be worse - beautiful weather, and I imagine the warranty will take care of everything except for the $50 tow charge. The only reason there's a tow charge is that due to an MCO mixup, dealer paperwork had wrong VIN. Could be worse....

Ouch!
My first guess would be a snapped shift cable. The other option, though less likely, is a failed shift box. Hopefully, they can get you sorted quickly and back on the road.

At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Turns out the shift cable had just stretched.
But here's the part that bugs me: the dealer said the warranty wouldn't cover it because it was considered a "wear and tear" item.
160 miles on the bike, and the cable stretching to the point where the bike is unusable, and that's somehow considered "wear and tear"?
Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed.

That sounds pretty fishy to me. Is your bike a 2013 and did you take it to the dealer that you bought it from? If so, that's pretty lousy customer service. After all, it hasn't even reached the first service interval and could be a result of poor dealer prep.

I took it to a different dealer due to time of day and distance when the breakdown occurred.
I ended up stopping by the dealer I purchased it from (Route 66 in Marina del Rey) to resolve a tiny paperwork issue and they said that it sounded a bit bogus to them too, and they wouldn't have charged someone period.
They're going to talk to genuine and see if they can get the matter addressed - if not, they offered to give me a credit with them. Frankly, that's a really stand up thing for them to do. After all, my money lined another dealer's pocket, and they are willing to step up and fix the situation. I guess that's the advantage of dealing with a smaller dealer that doesn't have any large Japanese companies as their primary product lines.

Did you get a 2013?gar1013 wrote:Could be worse - beautiful weather, and I imagine the warranty will take care of everything except for the $50 tow charge. The only reason there's a tow charge is that due to an MCO mixup, dealer paperwork had wrong VIN. Could be worse....
My 2013 Stella had the wrong VIN on the MCO too. It would really be something if all or many of them did.
Edit: I see you may get reimbursed for the stretched cable. I hope so!

Would be nice if you got reimbursed for any charge resulting from a wrong VIN too, since that isn't your fault at all.

Mine is a 2012 - the MCO issue arose because they had an identical bike in storage.Spud wrote:Did you get a 2013?gar1013 wrote:Could be worse - beautiful weather, and I imagine the warranty will take care of everything except for the $50 tow charge. No real cost associated with the MCO issue, which is a relief.
