How to check idle rpm?

How do I check the idle rpm on a stella. I have an automotive multi-meter that can check 4, 8, and 12 cylinder cars. Usually when I check other cars I attach one end to the coil and the other to the engine frame. This doesn't seem to work on the Stella. What am I doing wrong?

I think, but don't quote me on this, that you attach it to the spark plug. To get a read on the idle.

I use one of these:

I've not tried using an automotive meter, It may work but would be off by a multiplier of however many cylinders you have it set for.
