Front crash bars: Finally!

Post by slotrod65 »

I purchased Cuppini front crash bars for my Stella from the dealer when I ordered the scooter, but the prospect of drilling into the front legshield has kept me from installing them. On my trip to London a few weeks ago, I studied a number of scooters to see just how it was done. Everyone I spoke to said: measure, measure, and measure again! Well. today I bit the bullet, and just went at it...

First, I started measuring. I found that my Stella is not straight, the horncasting is not quite centered, and that the front turn signal housings are mounted in slightly different places on the leg shield. (!) Masking tape and several flexible steel rulers were helpful in this stage of the task:

Once I measures and test fit the bars for the seemingly hundredth time, it was time to go for it:

As it turned out, the holes were about 1/4" too close together, and I had to open them up almost 1/8" to the outside. Thank god that the rubber bumpers cover my mess.

So, after thrilling the legshieled holes, it was simply a matter of marking the undersides of the floorboards with a pencil. The brackets were already lined up. Drill, bolt, and bang! It was suddenly done. Now for the lights and mirrors...

I do plan on swapping out the lower brackets for a pair of stainless steel ones, as the stock ones are simply iron, and apparently they rust quickly. Melv's Weld in the UK makes them, and he advised I simply mail him mine and he will copy them in SS. So that will have to wait for the winter.

They look like they might actually protect the flimsy legshield and footrest if the scooter were dropped. Good job!
