Windshield Alternative

Post by charlie55 »

Hi guys:

I've just about given up on getting the OEM windshield, so I've been poking around for alternatives. One that caught my eye was the Slipstreamer "Scoot 66" model, listed as being 20" wide by 13" tall. Granted, it doesn't have the aesthetics of the OEM, but I'm looking at it from a more functional point of view (i.e., helping to keep me from freezing my chest hair off this winter). They have some other scooter-specific models, but they're a bit too tall for my taste. Here's a photo:

Anyone have any experience with these, or care to offer an opinion?

Thanks

less chest hair will make you more aerodynamic?

Perhaps, but I really don't wanna look like Don Knotts when I put on my wife-beater, grab a brew, and park in front of the tube.

I guess the obvious question is how good will the fit be on the Blur headset. You may need to do some cutting, or it may have such a large gap that a significant amount of air comes through anyway.

You might want to take a look at this thread where someone bought a universal windscreen and had it break right away. Maybe you can at least check to see if they are the same model and avoid a bad purchase.

Yeah, I saw that thread. Looks to me as if he picked up one of those eBay "one size fits all" cheapies. Some of those even carry a disclaimer stating that they're meant for 50cc and below, and not for speeds in excess of 30mph.

I contacted Slipstreamer directly and inquired about the sturdiness of their rigs, and they stated that all of their stuff is rated up to 100mph. Besides, they've been around for quite a while and I've seen nothing but good press.

I hear you regarding the headset fit, and it does concern me. But I'm pretty handy with a chainsaw and blowtorch. Besides, I can probably pick one of these up for about 60$ plus shipping. Not exactly chump change, but an acceptable risk.

I really wish that Genuine could handle stuff like this a little better. I understand the deal about not wanting to carry too much inventory, but, geez, you'd think that they'd have a little more clout with PGO, being the sole U.S. importer/re-brander.

I'm probably gonna order this windshield today and I'll keep youse posted as to how it goes.
