Anybody install a power outlet and/or GPS Mount

Post by groovedirk »

Okay I decided to postpone upgrading my horn..I realize I almost never use my horn--either on the scooter or in the car--except to vent my frustration and the cost to install the Stebel is just a little high--both Scooterworks and my dealer want an hour label ($85) to install. Which I just can't justify to myself ontop of the $40 for the horn. 1/2 hour? Maybe...

Anyway I started thinking what I DO use and it's my GPS in my car. I'd like to get one of the RAM mounts so I can switch it to the scooter. I don't think there's enough room on the handlebars so I'm thinking it's got to go off the mirror stem....Any ideas? Anybody try it?

And lastly, I miss the little drink spot and power outlet on my old Buddy 125. I don't have any idea how to add that little storage area on the Blur, but a power outlet should be a possibility. I saw one Modernvespa a post with people adding one. Anybody do that on a '06 Blur yet??

I dont see why you couldnt add the plug if you wanted to. Many automotive stores carry 12v outlets. All you would have to do is wire it directly to the battery. Im pretty sure thats all that is done on the 07. The manual states the 12v charger is always available, but to only use it when the scooter is running. This makes me think its hardwired, but using it when the scooter is off would just tax the battery and force you to kickstart later when you drain the battery charging your phone.

Alternately, you can hardwire the positive from your battery, and splice into a good ground under the cluster with the power plug for the GPS, rather than dealing with an outlet plug that could rattle loose over time. Just remember to unplug it when you get to your destination (which I assume you will do anyways to prevent theft)

I believe someone that used the RAM mounts had to use the U-Bolt with backing plates to attach the mount to the mirror stem, but it will hold just fine and be very stable while riding around. Also make sure you get the short arm, unless you want the device to be close to your face, then the medium should be ok. The large is just way too big for the Blur.

I did the plug, easy peasy. I drilled a hole in the battery cover with a hole saw and snapped it right in, and attached it directly to the battery. I'll take photos later. works fine with my short ipod charger, but the seat won't close with the usual long plug. It'll make more sense with the pix.

Thanks. That's all great advice. The RAM Mount I'll probably tackle first and then try and figure out where to mount the power. I can always use the GPS on battery power for 3-4 hours, which is longer that most of my rides.

And FYI, the horn install is pretty easy (I've done three of them now). I have the write-up done, I just need to take a couple things apart and take some photos. It takes about an hour, but isn't rocket science at all. If you're looking to tap into the battery for a power adapter, you ought to run horn wiring while you're at it.

As for using the horn, I use mine all the time - has keep me out of lots of trouble. I startled the cell phone out of one woman's hand who was about to merge into me. That was pretty sweet.
