HID's Installed!

Post by davelhunter »

I know there were some questions regarding the compatibility of the HID kits with our Blurs. I just wanted to confirm that I installed a plug & play kit last night and it worked fine. The light output is amazing. It is easily 3x as bright as stock. I just used a standard HID kit for cars that I bought off of ebay for $65.00. It took me about 15-20 min. to install. It was a slim ballast so I was able to use 2 way tape and tape the ballast right above the headlight housing. It fits with no problem even with my Stebel horn. I put this same kit on my 08' Kawasaki Ninja 250. It is completely unnecessary to get the hi/low beam kit, as the low beam is so much brighter than the stock high beam that you will never need to use the high beam. I realized this on my Ninja 250. For this reason I installed the low beam only kit. This kit is plug & play. It does not need to be wired to the battery like the high/low kit. I will try to post pics, etc. this weekend when I have time when I do my 28mm flatside carb upgrade.

Nice man!

So does the headlight run when the engine is off? I've wondered about that for a while, but everywhere I've seen says that HID is for DC only and that the lights are AC because they run when the stator is running.

Do you have it set to a switch? Turning the starter and the starting load from the ballast might be a lot for your battery. Let me know how it does on the battery.

HID

Post by davelhunter »

Headlight only runs when the motor is running, just like on my Kawasaki Ninja 250. I asked the HID guy about the AC/DC thing because I heard about that also. He said something about the ballast converting ac to dc or dc to ac, so he told me that it wouldn't be a problem so I thought I would just buy it and see. It seems to be working great. My Kawi has about the same size battery and I have been using it on that bike for 2 months now with no problems so hopefully the Blur works the same. I am assuming so, since the HID lights are supposed to draw less power than halogens. I think for a second on startup they draw more, but only for a second or so.

Well, that's good news if the ballast does the converting.

The Ninja's power system is likely much better endowed than the Blur's One of the weak points with the Blur is the charging system, so just keep an eye out for that. You're using more power now since the stock lamp is 35w/35w, they draw the same when running, but the HID needs more power for firing up initially. That combined with the draw from the starter and it's a pretty big draw at start-up.

I'm really not being a nay-sayer, lol. I want those to work out for you!

Thanks. Also, for anyone that may be wandering, the kit that I purchased is a 35 watt kit. I believe there may be 65 watt kits on the market, but this kit is a 35 watt kit.

Could always just wire the ballast with an on/off switch if the initial load seems to be too demanding, then just turn on the headlight once the scooter is running.

since my kit does not have a high beam, I just flip the switch to high beam during the day and my light shuts off. I don't know if this is necessary, but if my battery starts to drain I will just do this when riding during the day. So far I have not experienced any battery issues yet though!

Oh, neat: there's the "off" switch to cut down on the electrical load when starting.

Keep us Posted.

Mozart2k, could you tell us more about the kit that you installed and what modifications you made to accommodate it?

Thanks!

I'm using ultra slim hi-low magnatic slide blub 35watts 8000K (Cool White) H.I.D. Kit + LED 8000K for dim light. Battery YTX-9

H.I.D. Come with relay box and cable to hook with std. headlight plug to control on/off and the power cable to hook with battery and another one for control silde blub.

Disadvantage of slide blub is lagging when you press passing light when you off your headlight.

I'm running with dim light in daytime and turn off H.I.D when surfing longtime red traffic light (a lot in Bangkok) and do extra charge in bed time with AC automatic charger

PS. G-MAX 150 Charge current 1.5 Ah (3000 rpm higher) not enough

With the single HID bulb kit(low beam only) you can just flip your switch to high beam while daytime driving. Your running lights will still be on, but this will turn your headlight off so it will not draw any power. Also on startup you can have it switched to high beam so the ballast dows not draw the power on startup and just flip it to low beam to turn the headlight on after the motor is running. I have not had any battery issues at all so far.

Do you have a link to the kit you bought, or the seller's name/ID? How would you rate the quality of the kit?

Here is the web site of the company where I bought it. They are located in Orange County, Ca. I actually went to their store to pick it up in person. Nice guys to deal with. Quality of the kit is excellent. It's shock proof & waterproof. Just tell them you want the 35watt low beam only kit and that you are going to use it on a motorcycle. Here is the web site:
