Oil change how-to's

Post by shdyldy »

Does anyone know of a step-by-step video or instruction booklet on changing the oil...engine and gear...for the Blur?? I have had the first few done at the shop but i know its probably a pretty simple thing i could do myself, not to mention the $75/hr charge from the mechanic!!! LOL
Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kymm

Here are step-by-step directions for the Buddy, with photos:

topic76.html

That should give you the gist of it, though some of the locations and quantities are different, so read the oil threads in the Blur section, and your manual, too.

Thanks 2stroke.......I had seen the thread on the Buddy oil change and that's what made me think, maybe there's one out there for the Blur. I went thru the owners manual, but as anyone who owns a Blur can tell you,the book is kind of a joke!!!

Keep the shiny side up :)

I have to change mine soon, so I'll try to write up a similar guide. I always get distracted and forget to take photos, though. It'll probably be next weekend though, I'm going out of town this weekend.

If you want to shoot photos while you work, I certainly wouldn't complain, ha.

There are only three tricky bits to changing the crankcase oil. One is rigging a funnel (or just using a giant syringe) to get fresh oil into the openings. (By the way, you fill through the dip-stick and plug openings, there are not separate pour-in locations like on a car) The second is simply making sure that you don't put too much oil in - it'll bog and you'll lose a lot of power. The third is locating and changing the filter.

For issue one, I just grabbed a regular automotive funnel at O'Reily's and then got 12 in pieces of successively smaller diameters of silicone tubing. Each smaller size fits tightly into the size above it and the largest size jams perfectly into the opening of funnel. The funnel I have also has a little tie-off tab with a hole in it. So I use some twine to tie the funnel in place while I pour the oil.

For issue two, start by only adding back in .75L of the total 1.0L it calls for. Then crank it up and run it for a couple minutes, let it sit for 30 seconds, then check the oil at the dip stick. You want to be in the upper 3/4 of the dip stick when you've screwed it all the way in and then back out. Add oil sparingly until you get just enough in there. I can't stress this enough - DO NOT OVERFILL!

Issue three is first locating the filter (it's behind the front wheel sitting on top of an oil cooler). Remove the two screws at the top of the little grill up there and then using a 21mm socket, get that bad boy off of there. Be sure to "kiss" the old filter to the new so that you get a layer of oil on the dry o-ring. Install the new filter and tighten the shit out of it (within reason) - they're notorious for working their way back off and spraying oil everywhere.

For the gear oil, I have a big measuring cup I got from the local motorcycle shop. I use it as the catch cup for the gear oil so that I can measure exactly how much came out of the transmission. You're supposed to put .09L (yes, it's ridiculously little oil, but that's what's in there). So you want to make sure you're getting .09L out, which you should, and that you're putting exactly that much back in. The craziest part is that the gear oil goes in blood red and comes out neon green! It's thick as can be, so you'll want to tie off your funnel again for filling.

Hope that helps.

Or instead of messing up with the funnels you can get yourself some of these 60cc syringes.

I thought about using one of those big eye dropper looking things used for basting turkeys and such to fill the engine oil. I think some of them are even marked in CC or ML.

Hey Brian, when you end up changing your oil, would you mind showing me? I really need to change mine and would prefer to learn how to do it myself.

Hey, Chris, sure, bring yours over and we can do 'em together. Go pick up an oil filter and the engine oil. I have enough gear oil to last the rest of my life.

I'm gonna do it next weekend, probably saturday, that work for you?

Disclaimer: This is my first time on the Blur too, but I've changed my old Vespa transmission oil plenty of times, and my wife's motorcycle oil, and I've read up, so it should be easy enough.
