burning oil

Post by Paul Corbiere »

I have a new Rattler 110. Actually, my son has it in Florida and the shop that sold it to him (new) has told him to fill the oil "when the light goes on." He has put 600 miles on it and has dumped 2 quarts of oil in it (not including the first oil change). Should it be burning THAT MUCH oil?

I'm not a scooter mechanic (I'm a car mechanic) but I do know that break in has alot to do with it. If the scooter was ridden hard right off the start most likely the piston rings did not get a chance to "wear in" correctly and could be causing blow by thus burning oil. I can only assume that a scooter's engine works on the same basis of a car engine and blown rings usaully cause oil consumption. By all means though two qaurts of oil in 600 miles seems a bit excessive considering that (I think) they hold less than a quart when full. Only other possibilty is perhaps an oil leak but that would seem noticable.

It's a two stroke, burning oil is part of the deal. I don't know if 300 miles is about right for a quart of oil in those or not. You'd get better answers in the Rattler/Black Cat section ;)
