The "PiG" has indigestion.....

Post by Wheelz »

Well it apears I have my first mechanical problem with the rat, she has 5400 miles on the clock, and this is the first issue I've had.
Not sure what has happened, but coming home from work last night cruising aprox 50 mph, coming down a minor hill, she just cut out and did not start. It sounds like it's not getting fuel, putz around with it adjusting idle draining carb, etc... no luck-I can attest to the road side service, though, quick and responsive I was home within the hour.
Looks like I have to figure out how to get it, to Hard1's shop in Ft. myers, but thank god he's opened a new Genuine shop, closer than fricken Miami.
I'll keep y'all posted.

That's what mine did. Scored cylinder and piston caused by malfunctioning oil pump.

yeah, I'm hoping it isn't that severe, but out of curiosity how long did it take you to get your Rat back? I know no shop is the same but an aprox time on how long I could be down might help?

ok a few things to double check quick
make sure your plug wire didnt come loose
make sure you are getting spark
if you have spark
when you have the plug out put your thumb over the spark plug hole and hit the starter button if it forces your tumb of the hole then get a compression guage anything less then 120 you need at least new rings
if it didnt force your thumb off more then likely you will need more then rings
if no spark check your kill switch and your side stand switch to make sure they are working

thanks for the advice i'll try that when I get home. I don't believe the rats have a side stand switch, so that's not it, it turns over so I don't believe it is the kill switch-i'll try the other suggestions later this eve though-thanx again.

Once they got the parts (and it was under a week), the mechanic had the thing back together again in a day. Total...just about 2 weeks.

Well cats and kitties, it looks as though she seized some how? Oil was in it and it was working just fine, but the rings are shot and it needs to be rebuilt. It looks as though Genuine is covering this via warranty so I'll let y'all know the specifics when I find out.

Just got her back today, a short trip to the store, and she seems to be running great.
A little under two weeks without it and I'm jonesin for a ride;}I gotta take er easy for a couple tanks of gass though;{
Warranty came through with flyin colors, $53 bucks for a new battery and sparkplug.
Without the help of Mark (MB memember Hardd1) over at www.fortmyersscooter.com, it may have taken much longer, they arranged to have a mechanic come look at it at my house before arranging pick up, picked it up and delivered it for me.
There's not a whole lot of us in the area (soon, very soon)but if you are hit him up, for your scooter needs.
This was the true test to me, everything that I thought I was getting when I bought this scoot, I have gotten. should it have broken down, prolly not, but it may have been my fault, and it did, but it was taken care of like it was supposed to have been so alls good.
Christmas lights outside then ride :lol:

Okay, Wheelz...did they find out why it seized? They never had a definitive answer for my as to why it seized. It has always maintained a wee bit of oil on TOP of the oil pump and all over the case. I'm suspecting that the oil pump is leaking somehow (and it was replace the first time mine died) and that ithe full quota of oil jes' ain't makin' it to the cylinder. So I add oil to the gas every time I fill up. I sure wish somebody knew something...I'd like to take preventative steps!

you know keys, they weren't able to figure out the exact cause, on account all my pumps were working. My spark plug was fouled something fierce and it appears my air fuel mixture wasn't right and she was running real hot. I am no tech but I'm guessing that had a lot to do with it, that and maybe running as much as I do didn't help all that much.
I'm keeping a closer eye on my spark plug, idle, and air/fuel mixture.
rode her to work today and she runs like a champ, although I did have some kid a china scoot trying to get around me, cause I was taking it easy during the new break in, I caught him and passed him shortly though;}
Nice "150" there guy.....

fouled plugs and running to hot don't go together.

If it was running to hot the end of your plug should have been white, not black and wet

maybe fouled was the wrong term, it was not black it was more of a grayish/white color but it had a coating of crap on it, I don't know was just venturing a guess.

Wonder if someone knows what a safe operating temp is. Stage6 makes a gauge that looks like an easy install to read temp. Wouldn't fix the problems that are happening but you could shut it down before something was damaged.

i can find out i have an extra top end ported and ive been waiting to put it in
ill drop the jet back to 85 and strap it down while i take some temp readings ill mark it when it starts to run flat and thats probably a good estimate as to how much it'll take. might be about a month till i find out moving sucks.

just an idea of what i have been looking at.
vespa T, that would be sweet if you could get a basic reading. my season has come to a halt so no worries on the time. thanks for the effort. i have some mods that will only produce more heat i'm sure.

You are running way too lean with a white or gray plug. You should be looking at biscuit brown. The correct way to tune your carb is to go really big with the jet, say a 100, if the engine 4 strokes (misses and doesn't want to go when you give it gas) then you go down 2 sizes, keep going down till it stops 4 stroking. If it is a little too rich, it will cough as you are pulling awaythen clear its throat, too lean and it will need to be revved in order to develop enough go to pull away, way to rich and it will simply not pull away, it will idle all day, but won't pull. If you continue riding with the mixture as lean as you are, you will seize your engine, no doubt.

Thanx for the info scootertuner, I have since had it rebuilt, and am getting ready to take her in for a quick tune up and to make sure she's runnin right, i.E. too rich/lean. I am only partially mechanically inclined and even less on the scoots, so it's all a learning process. That is exactly why I am a member of this forum, to learn and help others with the info I have learned, well that and it's nice to have a group of people that like to talk about thier rides, and are generally very helpful.
