Our driving was mixed between secondary highway and back road. Lots of hills, both up and down. We kept the speed consistantly between 28 and 35 MPH (verified not buddy miles per hour). I weigh 210 and she weighs 125 lbs so she managed to keep up with those speeds extremly well except for the largest of hills (and they were very large indeed).
Her Buddy 50cc is completely stock. My Roughhouse has the Top Performances Trophy 70cc kit, 6.5gr rollers, medium Stage6 contra spring, stock clutch springs, Arreche 17.5 mm carb w/manual choke, stock air box and stock exhaust. It revs between 6800 and 8400 RPM's.
My scoot can man-handle those hills, slaughter off-the-line and actually do wheelies...

Her scoot has less than 200 miles on it. Mine has over 1200 miles on it.
Her 50cc scoot made 87 MPG that trip. Mine made 82 MPG that trip. She was driving mostly 3/4 to WOT. I was driving 1/4 throttle or less....

For 5 MPG's I'll take the 70cc any day of the week.....
