September Scavenger Hunt, Weeks 3 & 4
SEP 14, 2009: THIS IS SEP' SCAVENGER HUNT, PART 2 OF 2. This last Scavenger Hunt I lead will last through September 29th, 12:00 midnight, your time. That will give me one day to process everyone’s scores and get the results posted so the new October Leader can begin.
THE POWER OF CONSERVATION is our new theme for this hunt (aren’t you glad I only led 2 hunts??? Yessireee) This hunt it intended to be Very Positive, Educational and make everyone feel good about their own part in ‘saving our planet.’
Guess what? Everyone here is already conserving and helping to keep our air clean, every time you ride your Buddy which gets apx. 90mpg. Less gas used = less gas emissions in our air to deplete our ozone layer. So, by now you know I live in Oregon where we take all this 'stuff' seriously. Let’s have some fun with it. This hunt is intended to allow people to score pretty large numbers so GO FOR IT!
I AM ALLOWING TWO PICTURES FOR THIS HUNT (as it lasts 2 weeks; that’s only fair), and all the below applies to each picture (the final text Bonus paragraph can only be listed once):
+2 Your scooter must be in pix
+2 You are in pic with your scooter
+5 For multiple Buddy’s in pic (saving more gas = better air to breathe). Your own Buddy doesn’t count, but every other one will.
+20 pic at the entrance of - or in line – at a recycling center. Must see physical evidence that’s where you’re at (like a sign or other recyclables there)
+20 Pic in front of any business or residence whose focus is on some aspect of energy saving resources/concepts or alternative sources of energy. Please explain it to us.
+20 Wearing something that protects your skin from the Sun / Ozone skin damage (wow – this one’s a no-brainer if you’re in your protective riding clothes). Your face also needs to be protected by some kind of hat.(or helmet??).
+10/EACH - pic with the ways YOU (& family) are currently saving / conserving: Example: Pic on your curb next to your recycling bin and holding things you recycle = 10 points for ‘recycling’ only – each item recycled is Not worth 10 points. Now, if in the background you have solar panels on your roof and your bicycle– that’s another 20 points! This can really add up!
+20 Show us something new you learned about during this Scavenger exercise (during September) that you will begin doing regularly to help save our planet in some small way. Getting family involved is a great idea too. Here's a website of 50 ways to save the planet. There are many more ways than 50, so Google can really help out to find more ways.
http://www.matessa.org/~mike/50ways.htm
Notes:
1) Laying down/resting/sleeping/just being lazy is NOT considered saving or conserving energy (darn!)
2) G-rated responses only please
3) You must score yourself in these submits; but I reserve the right to over-rule scoring (I’m pretty nice and would like to see very high scores)
THE FOLLOWING DOES NOT NEED A PIC:
+30 points: One paragraph of text on how you are doing something to 'save our planet' and/or 'conserve' on energy, recycle, etc. Keep it short and sweet, honest and sincere. This Bonus, although similar to the "+20" pic above description, is easier as it's just text and doesn't require a pic; but hopefully it will make you do more (without having to gather everything for a pic).
I think I'll go get a nice big glass of filtered water now! Have fun with this.

Well, you can't get them all in one pic; but that's why I didn't fence you in by stating exactly what has to be in the pics - but you do get 2 pix; hopefully one won't submit the same pic twice; that won't fly. I'm not familiar with places in the areas You live in, so I have to leave the door a little open for you to figure out what you want and can do. I'm flexible but need to get the Power of Conservation theme represented well in the pix.
Lots of opportunities; I hope you'll get at least 200 - right???
javascript:emoticon('')
I hope I gave enough choices and opportunities for people to find lots of things for their pictures. You do not have to get everything I've listed in a pic.
Does this help ? I have no TOTAL POINTS TO ACHIEVE for this week; but the scores can be BIG.

And that's just the September Hunt. If you search for Scavenger Hunt you will see that the Hunt has a long history - long in MB terms anyway.
So join in! When the September Hunt ends, the winner should lead October's Hunt. Rinse and Repeat, ad infinitum (please, no ad nauseum jokes, OK?).

22points (unless this dosent count as a recycling center)

This is a recycling bin outside a local Lemont business - residents get their recycle stuff picked up at their homes here, but not the businesses so this buiness is doing it for all the other local businesses.
Here is a link to the story in the local paper

+2 Your scooter must be in pix
+2 You are in pic with your scooter
+20 pic at the entrance of - or in line – at a recycling center. (If this does not count I'll go back and get a pic of me closer.
+20 Wearing something that protects your skin from the Sun.
I'll have another photo coming but so far my count is 44 pts.

+10/EACH - pic with the ways YOU (& family) are currently saving / conserving: Example: Pic on your curb next to your recycling bin and holding things you recycle.
1. Nissan Altima; is a cash for clunkers car that we bought about a month ago to save gas from our 15mpg minivan.
2. Lawn mower, represents the fact that I don't mow my lawn every week in order to save gas an pollution, I also don't water my lawn. I guess that could be called responsible lawn care.
3. plastic grocery bag, I refuse to take these bags whenever I do not need them.
4. Recycling bin...no brainer
5. garbage can, we don't use plastic trash bags and we simply dump our loose trash in the can, we also send all of our bio trash down the garbage disposal.
6. Buddy 125, I bought this primarily to save gas over my full sized Dodge pick-up 5.9ltr V-8.
60pts
Essay 20 pts: During this exercise I learned about ways that I can start making my house greener, and a couple of those I will be investing in. The first one is a rain water barrel for free water, these sit outside of your home and they simply collect rain water which reduces the load on our town's water supply and saves the environment by reducing the amount of water that needs to be pumped throughout the city. I plan to use a simple filtration process for this rain water in this way we will have a wonderful way to supply our cooking and drinking water free of charge, and I'll probably store it in used milk jugs there by reusing materials.
Another thing that I learned is that my home could be supplied with a portion of its power through a VAWT (vertically aligned wind turbine) basically a windmill that catches the wind blowing from any direction. These are a bit more expensive but I would get a tax credit on it and I would save money on electricity not to mention reducing the amount of fossil fuels that are burned in order to supply my home with electricity.
I forgot to grab a compact florescent light bulb for my picture, but we use them throughout our entire house and have for several years with fantastic results.
It wasn't part of this exercise but we recently remodeled our fellowship hall at church and got rid of our old carbon monster window AC units, and our ancient boiler system and replaced it all with energy efficient central AC units, and a gas furnace. With the new HVAC units we put in new programmable thermostats that we have programmed to only use the heating and AC when we are in the building. We removed all of the old energy gobbling florescent lights and replaced them with the newest low energy small tube florescents. We also put in acoustic tile ceilings lowering our ceiling through our fellowship hall by a foot and a half thus giving us less space to heat and cool. I would have never thought of this but when we did our energy audit we found that one of the biggest energy wasters in our church was the emergency EXIT signs that used incandescent bulbs to light, so those were replaced with the new LED EXIT signs. We also installed a hot water circulating unit that keeps hot water in the lines and enables us to get hot water from our taps even while they are 50 or more feet from the water heater; doing this keeps us from wasting water and needlessly heating water that will simply cool in the pipes.
30pt Bonus for 2 pic before the 29th deadline.
44 from first pic
60 from second:
20 essay
30 bonus
154 pts.

...it will all come out in the pictures!!!Cecijinetta wrote:What new addition? do tell...

Some of the fun ways to save the environment have been “cart rodeo” at the Walmart, riding our bikes around the parking lot collecting the grocery carts pushing them ahead of us while seeing who can collect more to return to the storage area; this was done with kids while Mom is shopping using her BOB Yak trailer to carry the groceries home. A few more ways to help preserve earth for the children starting with the picture we recycle more than we toss into the trash, flattening most cardboard items (cereal boxes, energy bar boxes, soy milk cartons etc), we only recycle what newsprint we don’t use for cleaning in pruning fish tanks or burning in the fireplace (winter months), we don’t even take the paper and we carry cloth grocery bags most of time when we shop. We ride bikes for fun, we ride to work, we ride for exercise, we ride in groups and we ride alone. We are a cycling family. We don’t buy Styrofoam, we do buy in bulk certain products (both food and non-food items), we installed a whole home water filtration unit shortly after moving into our home almost 12 years ago and have always had low flow shower heads (we have three kids who all played soccer, need we say more), we use both a front loading HE washer & dryer, we use about 40% natural or environmentally safe type cleaners, planted five trees in the yard (three different oaks; live oak, burr oak, shumard red oak since they are long term growth trees), we use compact fluorescents where we can, we do adjust the thermostat by letting the house get warmer during the day in the summer and cooler in the winter when empty. One thing we would like to implement is getting RID of all the junk mail and that is something we will look into.
PS: ...and we have two full time "scooter heads" who ride most every day to work, school and play!
