Back in the 80s, I made a trip to the Daytona 500. Nobody could stay close to Bill that day except A.J' Foyt (Yes, A.J. in a stock car. He has raced everything but gopeds).
-A.J. ran out of gas with 3 laps to go and Bill cruised for the win. It would have been a great final lap if A.J. had a little more fuel.
-Bigger restrictor plates at Daytona during those days. Drafting occurred, but much less, so there was far more passing.
-The same year, I travelled to Charlotte for the World 600. I watched Darrell Waltrip lead most of the race. Bill took the lead with about 10 laps to go but he couldn't hold off DW, and settled for 2nd.
-Going to the track to see a race is quite an experience, especially when your favorite is winning.
