Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
ScootLemont: The tough go scooting! Who's with me?

Here is the plan... I will retire as huntmaster after 3 more weeks.
At that point I think the hunt should keep going, but not for 3 month blocks (I think a lot of new people dont want to jump in because they are starting 8 or 10 weeks behind in points) I think it should run either one week at a time or in 4 week blocks for scoring (with a winner at the end of each 4 week block)
Who will run it?
I think it should go to the person who wins this one - (or the next person in points, if the winner does not want to run it)
They then run a 4 week one... the winner of that one would then take over and so on.
There are enough people in warm parts of the country (and nuts in the cold parts) that this should be able to go all year long.
During the last week of the current summer hunt, I will post all this up and do a poll about how it should continue (so no need to fill up this thread with that stuff - save it for the special thread during week 14)

Well of course I wasn't complaining about the beach props :-p But we did work extra hard on that one ;) But I understand where some people might have thought it was a liitle over^surf^board :-p But the props are how we make sure the pics are superbly unique. Finding a gopher, even a stuffed one is NOT easy :P

But thank you for putting this all together, it is great fun and I know you've taken some flack for some things. I'm not giving you any here, I was just wondering...

Thought I might add an explanation about the whole "The Center of the Universe" thing in Ashland.

Years and years ago...like in the 1980's....there was quite a rivalry among the various areas of Richmond. Those who lived south of the James river, The Southsiders, often hackled those who lived west of the city, The West Enders. Then there were those who lived in the Fan area, which was very old and historic.

Well, it all started with a bumper sticker for the Southsiders. It read: "South of the James - By Invitation Only". Equally as snooty and snobbish, and not to be outdone, the West End came back with "The West End - Who Invited You?"

Trying to show their decorum, The Fan area jumped in with "The Fan - Preserved and Reserved". There were probably others from the north side and east end, but I can't recall those. Maybe jrsjr or some of the other Richmonders can remember.

Now, Ashland, is really not part of Richmond. It's 17 miles north and it's its own incorporated small town. But they wanted to jump in on the fun, so they came up with "Ashland - The Center of the Universe."

Well, all the other tag lines faded away in time, but not Ashland's. It is and has remained "The Center of the Universe".....quite frankly, because it is!

So now you know "the rest of the story."

So, today's adventure comes to an end and as we roll around the bend and head for home, we stop on the drive down to the little shack to take one last shot before we call it day! :wha:

Image

Thus ends today’s adventures of OScoot! and The Pinkster. Tomorrow is another day.

You flatter me. Thanks.

And great shots. Love the hay bales. And what's the story behind the tiny shack? It seems like South Fork or some massive historical house.

Jeff
*PS - The reason (beside the fact I'm a writer) that my posts have taken on a slight narrative bent is that my file allotment is full here at MB. I posted too many photos early and filled up the 3MB we get. So all my photo posts are now just duplicates of what I've posted on my blog (or one of my blogs). Then I take the HTML and drop it in here, do a few edits and submit it.

**PPS - I only did one shot this week, but I hope to have some more significant journeys later this week and will document those. Might even get to a longer city or town name if the weather and time allows. And will certainly try to contribute some cool shots for the video.

Stuff like....

Was wondering the same thing about no props this week! Maybe SL has got something up his sleeve for next week.
After the beach week prop "issues" I was a little gun shy about all the props - thats why last week only had a couple & this week has none.

SL, I def LOVE the costume idea... That sounds kinda fun, and yeah, I put my scavenger hunt ad in my sig block, I thought it would be easier to see...

This is Saratoga Springs, Utah, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. Not as green as the one in NY. I visited the NY one last fall and yes, it is beautiful there.

You're welcome. You are actually an entertaining writer! As for the little shack....I have no idea other than I ran across it on my adventure. Some people just have Waaaaayyyy too much money! I thought it would make a nice photo and it worked nicely in my adventure story!

Working on my next adventure now!

I may have the winner. I was out and about today and realized that if I donated to the local SPED program, the selectmen would rename the town after me.

So here's my new entry. They had a local painter do the sign, that's why it looks a little wonky, but I assure you that it's real.

Image

If you're wondering what the official name is (since my head is blocking some of the sign) and the character count, it's...

Historic and Gorgeous Jeffadopolous Mill Village and Subsidiaries by the Mississippi Tributary and Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious Falls - North Basin

Points, as I can best estimate because math is hard, come out to about two billion. I may very well be in the lead. PS - I didn't count the hyphen.

Sorry everyone. But thanks for playing.

Do I lose five from the photoshop version (which would put me at one billion minus five) or do I lose five from my original 16?

Please, please, please. Let me keep my 16. I meant no harm. Sometimes when I take a nap I drift off to Jeffadopolous. It's a really nice place.

I promise I won't misuse Pshop again - until the Photoshop week.

PLEASE! PLEASE!

Thanks.

Happy Sunday.

And this week's contest is rocking. We're already at two pages and it's only Sunday night.

Prime Minister Lemont, you should run for mayor of Jeffadopolous!

Chapter 2 – The Continuing Adventures of OScoot! and the Pinkster

Due to player angst about this post....all the photos except 2 have been removed......except these two. And I still think if Newslinky's marquee sign qualifies, so should my church sign. It's either a city sign....or it's not. Make up your mind. :?

Church sign 20 pts
Me in photo 1 pt
21 points

Only if it's a gopher with a really long name, wearing a swimsuit on a surfboard outside a ballpark getting a ticket from a cop who has his gun in a jello mold - then that would be an extra 1/2 point

Ok here is my first submission every for the hunt.

The first one shows the sign and the second one is just to prove that the actual city name is Dalworthington Gardens

So first my first ever scavenger hunt submission I tabulate my score as:
+21 for the city name Dalworthington Gardens
+1 for me being in the pic

+22 points for first submission! Woohoo!

I'll throw the first stone.

Where's the ENTERING or WELCOME TO or GREETINGS YOU'RE NOW IN or ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER?

I believe the sign has to have a term like those above to qualify. As some of us have found, many municipalities are loathe to spell out full town names. Therefore, your local ENTERING DALWORTHINGTON GARDENS might actually say... WELCOME TO D. GRDNS and that would be a mere six points.

And yes, there are only a few weeks left. And yes, you're not even on the scoresheet yet.

But if you are that good at this game then you're gonna win and OSCOOT and a lot of others will weep long and hard when you win the commemorative Dark Pink Buddy Club Voodoo Doll and Zombie Magnet.

Oh, nice photos. Great looking scoot. Welcome to Jeffadopolous. I'm the town clerk. The mayor should be around shortly to reprimand me for not being more welcoming.

9 points - 1 point for each letter in the city / town’s NAME as it appears on the sign
1 point - if you are in the photo with your scooter
= 10 points total!

Don't make fun, I look like a HUGE blob of camo, it was raining while I was riding home from work and I had layers of crap on...

Welcome to the hunt!

sotied - go read the rules
Your scooter with a city or town sign (we are looking for the usually nice “Welcome to _______” signs, but if you only have a “basic” city / town / village sign, that is ok.)
I believe the sign has to have a term like those above to qualify.

Sotied....welcome back. I was beginning to wonder where all that humor had run off to! I thought my "adventure novel" would at least raise a wisecrack or three from you! But nothing, nada, zilch. I'm so disappointed. :(

I humbly ask you to please refrain. I enjoy seeing the pics of the submissions specific to the hunt ... not every turn of the screw.

How about a compromise with a post of links to the pics and not actually embed the pics in the post?

And maybe I'm a wacko and you can just disregard my request.
I suppose I should be upset, even feel violated, but I'm not. No, in fact, I think this is a friendly message, like "Hey, wanna play?" and yes I want to play. I really really do.

BUMMER.

No, not on the off-the-meds rantaliciousness that I put up earlier. But on the missing chapter. AND on the fact that if someone as respected and civil as Oscoot can't post a journal of her scoot's journeys, I surely can't.

I will post one photo though because I can and because it relates. For the rest you'll have to go to http://www.bowlofcheese.tumblr.com.

Well finally....somebody said something! Hey, not a problem....I posted those because SL said he wanted pics for the video and because he ruled (in a PM) that my post office sign would not count but asked if I would post the pics anyway. Well, I didn't want to post the pics and then have all of you guys jump my a$$ because it didn't qualify. So I turned it into a funny story instead. Sorry if you felt it took over the thread and I would be more than happy not to have you endure any other long adventures.

Anyway.....I thought it pretty funny and frustrating that I rode 103 miles to get that sign and all I could find was the side of the post office that had the full name of the town. But my question now is...... How is that any different from newslinky's lettering on the city hall building or the marquee in front of ??? building? Looks pretty identical to my post office and/or church welcoming sign.

I will challenge that if newslinky's points count, then my post office should count....and that would be 23 points.

SL......you better chime in here soon.

Newslinky posted his pics out of order from his description -
the first pic is his confirmation (because you can see the town name on city hall)
the second pic is his entry - the sign

Re the photo story - I was only asking for the photo at the post office... not the photolog of the entire trip - but i like those - I think you should start a new thread if you have that many pics for a week (or even later this week) & give us a link in this thread.
you have some great pics & since they are much more than just scavenger hunt related, I bet a lot of other MB members would like to see them.

Well, I still challenge the marquee sign. It is not a "welcome to city" sign. It is simply a sign with the city name on it. Not any different than my church sign that welcomes you with the city name at the bottom.

Not a problem with the journal photos....I can easily remove them. consider it done.

You want a city sign.....HERE is a city sign.

:sigh:
I was out of town for last weeks...and I just got in town but I'm turning right around and leaving again so I don't think I'll be able to swing this weeks either. :( oh well, maybe the one after that.

If all we need is a sign with the city name on it, I can easily bump up my score today too.

I thought - incorrectly - that it had to be an actual Welcome to... or Entering... type of sign. Woulda saved me a race against the thunderstorms the other day.

Get ready for Arlington Heights or Dorchester Lower Mills later today or at least before the deadline.

1 point for each letter in the city / town’s NAME as it appears on the sign.
+1 additional point if you are in the photo with your scooter

Total 13 points!

Love your scoot. Haven't taken a hard look at Blurs before, but yours stands out. Nice.

What we want is "Your scooter with a city or town sign (we are looking for the usually nice “Welcome to _______” signs, but if you only have a “basic” city / town / village sign, that is ok.)"
so this is the ideal type of sign we want

Image
but this kind of sign is ok if the town does not have a "nice" one
Image

some of you are making it harder than it has to be...
should next week be "a photo of your scooter" +1 point for each weel

(but then I would have someone ride to a tire store & take a pic with their scooter in front of a rack of tires for 50pts)

A huge 6 points.

My scoot is under the word "City" in the IHOP parking lot, there are 2 of these signs for this town and neither are really safe to get close to. This one is at a highway offramp. I figured I would go fewer points with the nicer sign ;)

REVISED POINTS FOR ME!!!

Here's the new effort for this week. Scrap the West Bridgewater sign and insert Lower Mills Dorchester.

I go from 16 points to 21 points.

Here's the shot and a little recap...

Image

Here is Lower Mills Dorchester, a Massachusetts town on the edge of Boston. The town name has 20 letters in it and I’m in the photo along with scootle.

I should get extra credit for courting danger by being on a traffic island where it says Tow Zone.

*Had to run across two lanes of traffic FOUR times to get the self-timer to take the shot of me without capturing the side of a passing vehicle or over-exposing the photo. I'll post those if you want. They're horrible.

OK. OK. Stop begging. Here they are...

Image

You can see my head over the bed of the truck. Orange helmet.

Image

Here you can see the results of either a nuclear bomb blast in Lower Mills Dorchester or the very adept photographer jeff who set the camera up by setting the self timer exposure wrong by just clicking the shutter into my closed hand before setting it on the trunk or a car and running across the street.

Enjoy!

After examining my map, I was looking at possible road trips to a couple of garden spots within a 2 hour ride. Unfortunately, rainy weather and the start of school this week put a damper on my plans to visit either West Siloam Springs (17) or South Coffeyville (16).

Instead, I headed out as soon as school dismissed this afternoon, and found myself in beautiful downtown Collinsville, OK. (12 letters). The first sign I spotted says Welcome to Collinsville, but was partially obscured by vegetation. Then I found another on the other side of town. Take your pick . . .

I haven't figured out how to set the timer on my camera, and these were taken by the side of the road -- where I was a bit hesitant to flag down strangers driving past in pickup trucks to ask them to take my picture. So, no sign of my smiling face this week!

Anyway, 12 points!

And, isn't Dorothy lovely in the sunshine :D ? She'll be even prettier when I receive my blue/white gingham seatcover from Crystal, and then get her wheels painted sparky red. Now I just need to change my dog's name to Toto.

What do you mean red wheels?

Are you doing that or having it done?

How, how much, how easy or hard?

Thanks.
