Fender mount broke

Post by RuralRattler »

so last night i was riding around and my rat started rattling real bad (ironic i know) i rode it home and found that the metal mount that holds the fender to the exaust bracket had broke into. I took it to work with me today and will probably weld it up and slap it back on. has this happend to anyone else? I figured it was a fatigue failure that was made worse by vibration.

I've been thinking that mine was broken for some time now. Upon further inspection, I just lost the screw

Mine broke a while ago. So I cut the fender down so it only acts as a carb shield. Cut it in half down the middle and only attach it on the left side of the bike now. I kinda like being able to see the entire wheel/tire from the exhaust side anyway.

I thought about doing this also or even taking it off completely until i seen that it protects the carb. I got it welded up and back on just as easy though.

My daughter and I was riding this afternoon and i noticed a a loud rattle. We pulled over to check out the noise. The rear fender mount had broken on the right side at the bend that goes to to the fender itself... Looks like i get to play with my welder, wirebrush and flat black muffler paint... The last time i had to use my welder gee cant remember its been that long,,, 10 years or better,,, hope it still works

I have broken two of these mounts in the same place. I just put my third one on in 4400 miles. They need to upgrade this thing or something.

With a V8 pipe that brace isn't used; the rear fender bolt mounts directly to a tab on the pipe & the brace is history.

My bracket broke when an idiot spilled on my newly-acquired Rat.

I managed to manuver the bracket so that it doesn't rattle too much and the fender doesn't rub on the tire.

Now that I'm reminded of this, I have an urge to get it fixed haha...

So I replaced the screw and everything was awesome again! Then, about a week later, the mount actually broke on me, dammit!

Edit -- So I just pulled the two screws out and took the metal piece off the fender, it seems to have solved the problem. Has anyone else tried this?

Mine broke again yesterday on the same braket just at the other end... I had to take the finder off under a shade tree on the side of the road in order to get the rear tire to turn,,, this time the fender has a large hole where the tire rubbed it...

I went to Advance Auto Parts and bought a small roll of gasket making rubber and cut a good side say 12"x12" ... after taking off the seat and cabletieing the rubber exmission hose closer to the engine and away from the tire,,, I wedged the rubber behind the carb and through some other things to get it to stay,,, it was a tight fit and nothing else had to be done... no holes or screws to hold it,,, once the seat is back down it holds it fine once the one screw that fits in that rubber underbody is in place,,, I had to get a 1/2 " longer screw in order for it to be very easy to do...

Its gray but blends in well with the underbody,,, but also does a much better job of protecting the carb and other parts from water, dust, dirt, etc... Ill try and get some pitures posted soon,,,

The stock braket has broken twice now to where I had to stop the bike and ether fix it or tow it somewere,,, it was not going to roll...

When this finally happened to mine, I just unbolted the broken metal from the plastic fender and viola! Problem solved.

The part is 5.55 each, and they all break. I've had 2 on two Rattler break, and seen several others where I work. If that's the "weak link" on that model, someone in engineering deserves an award....every machine has it's Achille's heel.

Buy a spare.
