Review: GEN-U-BIN

Post by DennisD »

At the White Sand Mayhem Rally I met one of the MBers that lives across the bay from me. Seems he has come up with an item that Buddy riders might find interesting and useful. I have one and thought a review would be a good idea. Now, I'm not a reviewer of note and you already know that most of my pics are pitiful, but here goes.

The whole kit came in a nice plastic zip loc that has found a home in my Genuine top case which is far from waterproof.
Image

Installation is easy. First remove the bag hook that is on Buddy now. Take the curved top piece and slide it over the top of the glove box bending the center piece up. This is the attachment point and new shopping bag hook. The hook also holds up the bin lid so you can use both hands tofish out your registration for Officer O'Malley. You can go ahead and put the screw back in the new hook but don't tighten it down yet.
Image
See the two screws at the front of the curved piece? These go through the sliding tabs underneath that slide under the lip and hold the top in tightly. Just be sure not to loosen these screws too much or the tabs will come out of their track and spin around so the short end is toward the edge. Then it won't catch under the lip and hold it. I did that. Drove me nuts for about 10 minutes until I figured what I had done. Just turn it over and look at it. Easy. Slide the screws toward you and tighten them.
Image
Now just put the drink holder in the left and the holder with the strap on the right. There is a slot that it fits into. If you don't want to leave it there just throw it in the top case or pet carrier. You never know when those spontaneous parties will break out in the parking lot and you need another drink holder. 8)
Image
Image
The bin is large enough to hold a phone, glasses, tic tacs, old traffic tickets and any number of small items you might want to keep in it. It has a drain hole in the bottom and the inside of the lid is embossed with the Genuine Scooter Company emergency road service 800 number as well as a space to record the membership number. No digging through purse, wallet or pockets in your time of need. It can be locked but it better be a small lock. I stuck an 'S' hook in it for the pic. Removing the lock you can remove the bin and take it with you. If you don't care to bother with a lock the lid has a snap closure.

That's about it. Handy little item. Oh, don't forget to tighten down the bag hook! See, that's where that rattle was coming from. If you like it, shoot a pm to Perkussion. He's the MBer that came up with this little gem and will pass on whatever else you might want to know, like how to get one. :D There is also a website www.scooterdude.us.

How way cool! Well done--excellent idea!

How does the second cup holder do at speed? If I've got a cheesy syrofoam cup with a snap on lid in it and I'm zipping down the state highway, will I be wearing my iced tea within a few minutes? Gotta know! :D

EDIT: Looking at it closely, how deep is the first (left, in the pic) cup holder? I'm wondering how it will fare with a Medium drink of some sort from Subway or Braums or some place like that....

This looks very very good.

That is a great idea. The additional cup holder might turn into a catapult for my coffee if I hit a bump, but I love it.

Perhaps if someone glued nerf? foam triangles inside the holder would help secure the cup

Awesome. I love the concept and the follow through.
I suppose I should be upset, even feel violated, but I'm not. No, in fact, I think this is a friendly message, like "Hey, wanna play?" and yes I want to play. I really really do.

Yeah, I've been testing one as well. Didn't want to say anything until I used it a while. So far I like it a lot. The cup holder is sweet since it holds the smaller drinks and the larger ones because it's got like tabs that hold it up. It fits my vitamin water bottle that is too big for the cup holder in my car. I like the compartment for putting my camera & stuff in where I don't have to worry about it jiggling around and knocking into those rivets like it used to. I can't say much about the right side cupholder... I had it on for a little while and didn't go very fast or over bumpy roads so I don't know how a lightweight drink will do. I do know that the cupholder itself will not come out for sure. So far good! Not to mention they look great, like they belong there. Anyways, I'd really like to thank Perkussion for letting us test these, what a great invention! :D

I should have included the bottle size in the review. Sorry guys. The left hand holder has a 20 oz bottle in it. Since I'm left handed it will get the most use. Besides, you need the right hand to hold that throttle wide open when you're late for work.
The right hand holder fits pretty tightly in the slot, so it shouldn't jump out at all. On mine I trimmed a little excess mold plastic residue stuff from the slot and its a 'snug' fit.

The right side cupholder is good for long rides if you need to bring extra fuel or a drink. It's bigger than the left side one, so you could probably fit a big drink in there or if you put a small one you might want to put a coozie in there and it would be secure.

Another thing I think that wasn't mentioned is on the under side of the lid there is a place to put your roadside assistance # and stuff. Dennis, can you get a pic of that too? ...I'm kinda cripple right now.

After time to think ... Any word of molding this in other colors to match the interior Buddy panels? No worries here, since I have the black plastic guts, but matching colors for the other scoots would make it seem more integrated.

You mean the Genuine Roadside Assistance 800 number? Yes, its embossed on the inside of the lid. You must have missed that part.
There is a place above that to use for entering blood type, mother in laws life insurance policy number, or whatever you like. I will attempt to get a decent photo of the underside of the lid right now. Be right back.

Okay, I'm back. Here's the picture. I'll put it in the review. Boy, the things I do for my public!

That looks like a very cool idea; wish they come out two years ago, might have gotten one then – now I’ve adapted and actually like the open compartment.

Hey thanks man... it happened almost 2 weeks ago. Didn't get a blister til a week after it happened and the blister just
popped yesterday... Probably majorly TMI, but I shot the deflated blister full of triple antibiotic ointment and taped it
closed. Can't be too careful, if that gets infected it would be REALLY bad.

OK, enough about that, check out those sweet Gen-U-Bins! I'll have to snap a shot of the one on my Italia, it looks super.

I'm happy you're healing up, Krusty!

I just got my Gen-U-Bin today and put it on my scoot--just in time for my 3 hour trip to Enid OK tomorrow! It looks great!

The one problem I had putting it on--and this was the scooter, not the GuB--was with the screw for the hook. It seems that when I removed the original hook, the scoot's plastic slid down over part of the hole so it was difficult to screw the GuB in! Just a word of warning; it took a little work to get it back in (anyone else run into this?).

It truly looks great and I can't wait to test it on the trip tomorrow! :)

Bad news. My gen-U-Bin is mostly useless as I bumped the bin part off of my floorboard while installing and the corner that creates the hinge snapped off. I now have a tray with no lid. Other than that, the install was quick and easy.

You posted that you 'bumped the bin part off of my floorboard'.
However, you had stated to me that you had dropped it.
For the sake of R&D, in detail, how did it become damaged?

I believe you when you say it broke, but we tried to break one today
and we couldn't until we froze it and then threw it onto the floor really hard.
I mean really hard!

Polypropylene is pretty tough, flexible stuff.
We chose that material because of the heating/cooling cycles a scooter experiences.

We will be glad to replace the bin no charge, but we do ask you to send back
just the bin and the piece that broke off so we can look at it and send it
to the molders for evaluation.

Thanks. :)

I'll send you the pieces, but I'm willing to pay for the replacement part. You've got a great a product and I don't expect you to be responsible for my clumsy fingers. My broken part is 100% my fault.

This was maybe a 1.5-foot drop and it was about 50 degrees outside. Based on where it broke, I'm thinking it hit the corner just right.

I talked to the mold builder/injection-molding specialist today.
He was as surprised as I was that it broke.
He asked me to send him the pic and to send the part.
He also said he would add a 'radius'.
In other words, he is going to beef up those two hinge areas.

I'll PM you his address.
Doesn't make sense to send it to Florida and then I send it to Ohio.

When he gets the part I'll send you a replacement no charge.
Thanks.
In the mean time at least you have swell-looking drink holders! :D

I used mine on my ride to Enid (roughly 133 miles along state highways and various backroads) and it performed well. I'll continue to test it as I ride around town and see how it does. There's still one or two things I want to check out!
