dropped a Vespa today...

Post by purple »

My boyfriend rented a Vespa today, and we went riding. He was looking at the ocean, so I decided I wanted to take the Vespa for a spin. I had my feet on either side of the bike, dropped the keys on the floor board and was trying to pick them up, and dropped the bike. I tried to catch it, but in the meantime, it pushed me and I slammed my thigh on the curb..
Man, it's still killing me. I didn't want to go back home, we had only been riding about 45 min. I couldn't put my right foot down when we had stops because it hurt to put it down on the pavement. I'm limping, and I can't bend my leg without pain, much less sit with it straight out. I know you're not Doctors, but any idea what I did? I'm thinking I pulled something, or tore something. Anyone have an experience like this?
I'll have to pay for the damages to the bike. (Big scratches and scraped another part.)

That's bad news Purple. I won't venture a guess as to what kind of damage you did to yourself, if any. You might hurt more tomorrow than you do today. Keep a close eye on it, see a doctor if it swells or still hurts a lot in a few days. Good luck and recover fast.

Going to the doctor is good advice.

Meanwhile, having recently been in a scooter accident myself (September) I can say that the pain may not get to it's worst for two days--this is assuming we are just talking about bruising here. Additional bruising may appear for up to a week later and take longer to go away. Torn or sprained ligiments and tendons will take much longer to heal...could be months or more.

Definitely see a doc!

I'm not a Doctor, I'm a brick layer!

No wait, how does that go? :) Get better soon Purple! And for goodness sakes, get your injuries checked out by someone who knows what they are talking about.

Just walk it off and get back in there! If you go see the doc it will be nothing. If you really do try to just walk it off it may be something. kinda sucks but go get checked out.

Hope you get better –
One of the problems with a Vespa, when they fall they usually get damaged – our plastic skoots are better in that department, at least much easier to repair after they fall.

I will add my voice to the chorus of encouragement to go see a doctor to have it looked at.

My son fell a few years ago, he oculd move his arm and wrist fine, there was only a tiny bit of swelling, no obvious deformity at all, but he had pain. After 24 hours I finally got fed up with him carrying his arm with the other hand and took him to the ER so we could "have an x-ray to prove to him that his arm was not broken."   yeah, well, 9 weeks later we were back having the cast removed.

My brother in law recently low sided his bike going about 3 mph, happened to hit his knee with the handlebar just perfectly and broke his leg. He had surgery last week and is off his leg (no weight WHAT-SO-EVER unless he wants to have another surgery) until Christmas. At Christmas time they will begin PT. They doubt he will be walking much before next spring. :?

Another friend slipped on a small patch of gravel at the WKRP rally last spring, ended up that he broke his elbow.

Unless you have x-ray vision, you simply can NOT tell what kind of injuries you may have and waiting around to see what happens can often complicate things as soft tissue swells and pain sets in.

Please, go see a doctor. Maybe it is nothing, but maybe it is not.

Thanks for all the get well wishes! I went to the Doctor and I have a pinched nerve in my spine and groin strain... Took my pain medication and can finally sit on my thigh with just a little pain. I can't bend down very well to put on pants, but it'll just take time!

I'll find out soon how much money I owe to fix the gouges in the Vespa...
That's the part that really gives me pain...

Sorry to hear about this, purple!

Glad you went to the doc. As you've learned (as have I, unfortunately), even a minor drop can result in some painful and annoying injury.

Hope it's better soon!

I am glad you are mending without further incident. I can't help but be distracted about wondering why a place rents actual Vespa's. They just don't seem to me to be the best rental scoot. they are tall, somewhat heavy for their class and cost a fortune to fix. But maybe I answered my own question.
