Weight and ventilation. The 700 is lighter and has more vents. They both use the same shields though.

I've been using a 700 for the past few weeks and I'm fairly satisfied with it. I chose it over the 400 because of the weight and vents. It fits really small, though. My XL KBC feels a little loose where my 2XL EXO700 fits snug. It's pretty warm in the mornings with the vents closed up and the added chin skirt.

If I recall, when I tried them on they didn't fit the same either. I wear a larger size in the 700.

Sportbiketrackgear.com still has some great deals on both.

I got my 400 from sportbiketrackgear.com Good prices, and it shipped out pretty quickly. I kind of want a 1000 but I'm having issues letting go of my money.

I got a discontinued graphic 700 for $115 shipped a month ago on ebay. You can find a good deal if you look hard enough. :)

Scorpion EXO-400 vs EXO-700

Post by michelle_7728 »

One big difference between the 400 and 700 (at least to ME) is that you can get the EXO-700 in Neon Yellow. (If you are a "youth", then it's available in the 400 as well...)

I have the EXO-900. It only comes in 3 colors, none of them high visibility. After my accident back in September, I've been really looking into the high visibility thing (though it wouldn't have helped me in my accident anyway...go figure!). Anyhow, the Scorpion rep told me that the 900 will be coming out in the Neon yellow mid-November, which is the only reason I didn't go ahead and buy the Neon yellow EXO-700. It is a nice helmet!--but I prefer the modular. My modular held up just fine in my "face-plant" accident, which is why I got another just like it! :)

The major difference between the 400 and 700 is that the 400 is polycarbonate construction while the 700 is the more expensive composite construction (fiberglass maybe?). The 400 will be heavier than the 700. One benefit of the 400's plastic construction is that the shell is softer than the 700, which may reduce the risk of some brain injuries in certain impacts.

Still, both are DOT and Snell approved. I like and own the 400 because personally, I buy into the Motorcyclist Magazine research on helmets with shells that are simply too hard.

I have a 700 and really like it. My only gripe has been with the faceshield mechanism. I like to run my shield partially open sometimes. Once you get up to speed, the shield slams shut. My Shoei has the ability to crack the shield and leave it open. I wish all helmets had that option. YMMV.
One thing that I will say is that the 700's anti-fog shield really works! I regularly wear the 700 when I commute and really like this feature on the cold morning commutes.

The breath deflector on my 700 makes it impossible to wear glasses on cold mornings. It fogs them up in no time at all and the only way to clear them up is to crack the shield (it's about 1.5" minimum to the first detent, my other gripe) which freezes my face. There have been some folks who have drilled in an extra detent so that it only cracks open, but I haven't gotten around to that. If you screw up with that, they sell the visor opening system as an accessory and it's attached with two screws. One huge bonus to it that I've found is that you can buy a chin curtain for it for less than $10 which helps with both noise and cold air (more important in the winter). This affects the air flow to the inside which would help clear fogging issues with glasses.

I love that my 700 is so light and I fell pretty good about the protection it offers (my other helmets are 3/4 and modular). The thing that really kills me is that I have to swap out the shield so often when I'm commuting, that and I had to buy an extra tinted shield because I couldn't wear my sunglasses.

Here's the caveat, If I remove the breath deflector, my glasses don't fog and I can get away with sunglasses and a clear visor and no visor swapping (and the added space it requires to carry said extra visor around undamaged), but the visor fogs at stoplights.

I still think it's a really nice FF helmet, especially for the price (even more so if you find it on sale). It's also warm. I find that I don't need a balaclava when I wear it - at least down to 40 degrees so far - but just a neck gaiter. My modular (which doesn't fog) leaves me a little chilly in the same temps.

There's no perfect helmet, but you can have a lot more luck with a helmet than with gloves, in my experience. The 700 gets me pretty close to what I'm looking for in a helmet. Every model has it's flaws.

Yeah, I don't wear glasses in the morning and every thing's fine. I usually crack the visor at stoplights before getting on the freeway.

And while the neon yellow will get you noticed, so will this:

I love mine, but always have a craving for frosted breakfast cereals once I arrive at work.... :D

EXO 400 vs 700

Post by michelle_7728 »

LOL! Great posts!

I guess the moral of the story is that we're all different, but we all see the value in wearing a full face helmet!

I love that comment about the frosted cereal!
