time for today's Texas History lesson.

Most people (in Texas anyways) think of Pine trees when they think of East Texas. Rightfully so, they're everywhere. We had to plant all of them, because when settlers came to texas, they cut all of the natural trees down to build stuff.

Bonus fact.
There is only ONE natural lake in the entire state of Texas. Caddo Lake, in east Texas. Everything else is either a pond (small) or man made.

....... and knowing is half the battle.

Extra bonus fact: There are no natural lakes in Maryland. All man-made. So it's not so different a place from Texas after all. ;)

Off-topic bonus fact: There are over 10,000 lakes in Michigan. :D

It is snowing in Baltimore now. Like I said, depending on the area you may or may not have greenery. The city is definitely very urban, few if any trees except in older areas. The Inner Harbor is pretty much a touristy place. In the counties it is a lot better though in the past 15 years with all of the developments they cut down lots of trees to make room for housing. Baltimore is not all of Maryland though. Just to entice you a little, about 3 hours away bordering with W. Virginia we have mountains and lakes. If you guys end up deciding to move to Baltimore I can tell you more about that particular area. I cannot wait to take my scooter there. All of those scenic back roads!!!!

That's what I thought until I moved somewhere with lots of trees!

Of course, most were planted here, too…

OK look, I'm gonna level with you here. I'm putting my status as a resident of the right coast on jeopardy here, but it's got to be known before another innocent Texan gets trapped up here. Hopefully you read this soon because this thread is likely going to get pulled - and not by any moderators!

Over here on the eastern seaboard there's monsters. That's right, friggin monsters! It's so entirely different from anything you've ever seen in Texas that it'll melt your soul! There's sea monsters, tree monsters, lake monsters, bird monsters and worst of all... there's no babies, puppies or kittens out here - they're all little winged scaled fire-breathing gremlin looking things! Oh, and you know those trees everyone is talking about!? They don't exist. It's all Photoshopped! Chances are you're husband is being led out here under false pretenses so we can get some fresh ideas on how to further enrich the cover-up. The monsters in charge are getting more and more paranoid every day and they think that the left coast is getting suspicious of the whole scheme. Either that or they just want to eat his brains.

So, no... you shouldn't come out this way. There's friggin monsters everywhere! They'll even steal your scooter even though they can't ride it. That's because they're all mean monsters! Heck, you have to constantly re-roof your house if you're a home-owner out here because of the sky monsters. They steal shingles just because they can. You'll learn that real quick - sky monsters are jerks!

Stay in Texas... or better yet, move even farther away! And don't believe anything you see on TV or read on the internet... it's all a cover up! They even invited the snow monsters over. Now we've all got a big mess.

Monsters are jerks! You've been warned and your fears are all true!

And tall trees, not the short, squatty, drought-stunted "trees" of Texas.

Like most said here already, there's nothing wrong with Baltimore, all depends an WHERE in Baltimore. I'm just north of there in "beautiful' Lancaster County Pa. and we actually have seasions! I wouldn't trade that for year round warm riding any day!! :P

Go Caps! Gotta love me some Ovechkin, he's my celebrity hockey boyfriend.
Congratulations, I just watched your celebrity hockey boyfriend, OV, score the winning goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning. That gives the Caps a 10 game winning streak.

You will do okay. The scootering will be much better in the summer, less heat and humidity for long periods of time. Maryland is more or less at the same latitude as Kansas City, so I will be willing to bet only the 90 days of winter is going to be a concern for you. I would imagine you've had a few days in Dallas this winter that are similar to what you'll experience in Maryland, the difference is that the cold will last for a week, not a day. Spring and Fall is a great time to ride too. There will be many more opportunities for medium distance rides because the distance between population centers is measured in tens of miles, not hundreds like in Texas and up here in Kansas and Missouri.

Wait, since when did California have lots of trees? Come visit the Pacific Northwest if you want to see lots of trees :P

Don't ship your scooter, pay half the gas and I'll haul it out there for you. I need a semi-valid reason to take a road trip. Of course, you'd be required to ride up to Philadelphia with me to visit polianarchy 8)

I'm afraid that this is going to totally derail my scootering...especially since I was riding 2 weeks ago in the 70 degree sun. Does anyone have any thoughts, feeling, ideas on WTF a scooterist does in Maryland? I've lived here in Texas all my life...I'm 4th generation with 150+ years of Texas ingrained in me... I think I might freeze. I'm scared, what do I do about my brand new shiny black buddy?

BTW, I'd have to live in an apartment again with no garage and I have 3 cars and a scooter....where does the buddy go? In the living room? :!:
It takes a year to get used to the weather. My parents moved from Colorado to Atlanta, stayed there about 5 years, then moved back last year. The first year in Atlanta they were dying from the heat, then they got used to it and couldn't understand why I was dying when I came to visit, then moved back to Colorado and spent a full year freezing.

It is kinda funny- I think of Maryland as being WARM.
Valves are for wussies.

Well to let you guys know, the job is offering 30% more than he makes now HOWEVER the cost living here in Texas is much less than Maryland. We're trying to figure out if it makes good financial sense to take the plunge for something that may just be temporary. We were really hoping he would get an offer either here or Phoenix...we love desert, cactus, heat etc....but the job is something he is really interested in....It's a conundrum

Good grief, I get caught up with my dayjob for half a minute and LOOK WHAT HAPPENS. Baltimore has a WONDERFUL scooter scene. The folks of Charm City Scooter Club are some of the best in the US of A! So yeah, bring your scooter.

But, bring a budget to go back home & visit Texas often. I get mighty homesick up in herre.
