Stella 4T idle question??

Post by jimmbomb »

When I pull up to a stop light & slip it into neutral.. The clutch lever is out..
And I have a high idle....
When I pull in the clutch... the idle slows way down..
I let out the clutch (still in neutral) & the idle increases..
Pull in the clutch again & it slows down again.
Pop it into first gear & take off...
Next stop light.... same thing...
Is this normal?
Are the rest of you 4T owners experiencing the same thing?
All replies are welcomed and encouraged.
Thanks again... jh

I don't know whether it is normal or not, but my 4T doesn't do it.

'Tis a puzzlement.

Doesn't sound right. Could just be that the idle's set too high. (Easy to adjust; screw down by the carb.) Might be an issue with the choke. Sure it's pushed in all the way? Is it running right otherwise?

Runs great......
Just wondering what pulling in the clutch has anything to do with the idle...and why....

I idled it down last nite with the idle screw... pulled in the clutch in neutral..... and it dropped off wanted to die .....
Somethings f**ed up...

Maybe the clutch and throttle cable housings are intertwined somewhere in the frame, and there's a little interaction? Unlikely, but Weird Things Happen.

I'd take a look at the carb and throttle connection while flexing the clutch and see if the throttle cable moves.

My 4t does the same... it used to bother me, but I adjusted the throttle a bit higher to compensate!

Ahhhhhh haaaa.... finally....
thanks for chiming in pesce..
I idled mine up & it's very touchy.. borderline too fast with the clutch out...
gotta find that happy medium AND do what PeteH suggests...
Look for cable interference....

Thanks all & keep the replies comming from Stella 4t owners..

Mine does it too. I am not a mechanic and don't play one on TV. I wonder if the idle slows because it is engaging the clutch. That would slightly strain the engine as it spins the clutch.

I had my idle adjusted a little faster. It was set so low that it would stall when it was cold and I pulled the clutch.

I think Rondo is on to something here.

Mine had a similar idle speed disparity but its going away as it breaks in. My guess would be that before the clutch is broken in (or a bit worn) that it is still lightly engaging even when the clutch lever is pulled all the way in. Beat on the clutch for a day practicing quick starts and I'd bet it goes away.
