They bought a bunch of them just before the 2004 Republican Convention. I can't remember the exact details and there's not much online about it now, but IIRC, at the convention a "plainclothes" NYPD officer rode into the crowd at a bicycle protest, knocking people over, and was attacked by a protester that didn't realize he was a cop (even though in the pictures I saw, he couldn't have fit in with the crowd less or been more obviously a harley cop forced to ride a scooter*). I think the cop was knocked unconscious and there was a mini-riot and the NYPD was accused of trying to start trouble in what had been a peaceful protest up to that point.
I figure it was just another case of a Harley guy not being able to control the whopping power of a 200cc scooter.
(*He was wearing a white polo shirt and a novelty half-shell with a "no fat chicks" sticker on it. Yeah, that sounds like a leftist protester to me!)

Same should be said for the IQ level of the cop once you see the rest of the video that went with it... And that's all I'm going to say about it.Keys wrote:Protesters...just another form of speedbump.

It is! I skimmed the article and comments and read something else about this... I kind of agree with those who think it was staged. There was an eyewitness who apparently says the guy got bumped with the scoot, fell to the ground, stuck his legs under it and started screaming. He does sound SUPER DRAMATIC to me... he obviously knows he has 10+ cameras around him, also. Even the videos are choppy, but the second one on the sight almost looks exactly like that, too- but really, there's no way to know for sure.viney266 wrote:Cool that they are using scooters in town...
The video? Pretty rediculous That guy was yelling and crying worse than a downed basketball player.LOL
I know that in a protest this big, IN AMERICA, the police have to be overly cautious and on edge and trust no one because we're arseholes and even though the Occupy movement started out or wants to think it's peaceful, there's no way a protest gets that big here without having unrest- on both sides. Especially with the way it started out in NY- it only takes one person to ruin it for everybody else (thanks Bologna).
Really, though... I've had a truck wheel sit on my foot. Not roll over, SIT ON. Nothing. How likely is it that he really was hurt to be acting like that, even if he was run over? If he's that much of a ninny he shouldn't be at a protest.
Unrelated... scooter police? Hell yes.

If you look at the second video, the twat flails his legs underneath the scooter. I don't think the officer was in the right for riding the way he did, but the "victim" was attempting to get the crowd riled up.
Stuff like this pisses me off. I know NYPD has a bad reputation, and there are some bad cops out there that have abused their power and the public, but it makes you wonder how often the incidents you hear about are caused by the civilian intentionally for other intentions (in this case, publicity, but probably in most cases for fiscal settlement).

Back to scoots for Cops...They would ROCK in the city, only thing better would be a dirt bike, but that takes training. The transition for scooters would be easier, and cops could go anywhere.

While I won't wade in on whether this is fake or not, I will say that any suspicion of fakery does little to lend credibility to the movement. One opportunist taking advantage of a situation could reflect very poorly on the whole group when it's something as highly-publicized as this.

If you look at the various videos from all angles available, the puddle of blood under the victims leg might change your opinion. I'm not saying there is definitely no overacting going on, but the fact still remains, thus far any violence in the demonstration has been injected by the police. This has been a peaceful event. The violence is used by law enforcement is to make peaceful, lawful, events appear unruly and thus in need stricter control, which of course then opens the door to more violent response. It is calculated.
This video and interview shows the most different angles that I've seen so far.

I've had a leg run over my a 1,000lb ATV before with very minor bruising... this seems a little much.
The guy is a lawyer... that should say something. Who knows more about suing people/institutions for money than a lawyer? Next thing you know they will be putting "Caution capable of running people over" stickers on scooters... like the "Caution Contents may be HOT" on McD's (and others) coffee cups.

just watched more video that Skootz posted...Maybe a compound fracture? There is blood in the one video... but the last video of the cop pinning his face to the pavement with the nightstick??? REALLY you need to get cops like that riding a desk or off the force. Cause he kicked a scooter over its okay to do that? WOW.
This is gonna be a mess.
Sad to say...THEY STILL don't know what a damned scooter is!!!. Mopeds? motorcycles? really is it THAT RARE a vehicle? LOL

Thank you for that link. I hadn't yet seen a video where you could see blood on the ground; this has in fact changed how I feel about this... a little.Skootz Kabootz wrote:If you look at the various videos from all angles available, the puddle of blood under the victims leg might change your opinion. I still kind of think that the guy meant to be on the ground making a scene, but the cop seems like much more of an A-hole now.
Also, I cringed that Keith O called it a moped. Was it just me?

We shouldn't be casting aspersions on members of various professions any more than any group of people. It's as wrongheaded and presumptive as any type of prejudice.
Considering all the "People are mean to scooterists" comments and threads, you'd think we'd be a little less judgmental of the rest of the world.
The dynamics of getting run over—and the resulting injuries—and vary quite a bit. I have a friend whose arm was recently run over by a car. She had no broken bones, no bruises, nothing but a wide tread mark on her forearm the washed away. Am I going to let a car run over my arm because obviously it can't hurt me? Hell no. I know people who've had broken feet, injuries requiring surgery, etc. when they were run over.
Same goes for crashing. One guy crashes at 25mph, gets up, dusts himself off. Another guy dies from a broken neck.

This is all true and you are very right. But... the bf is Italian and since the protest started we've had many discussions about protests. I've been trying to explain to him that this is why I'm not involved in protests of any sort... no matter how they peaceful they start out, or how lofty the intentions... [in America] they always seem to devolve into everybody being douchenozzles. And I do mean EVERYBODY... it's stupid that no matter the reason for the protests, all the big ones seem to end up a street struggle against the local cops... that's totally unnecessary!! Not to mention... not the point of the protest. At all.ericalm wrote:viney266 wrote:^^^ so true and SOOOOO sad. Stuff like this is just... stupid. I'm not really trying to be judgemental, so much as I wish people would act like they had some damn sense. I will readily confess that I hate on stupid people and arseholes.

Yeah.. those silly protesters faking stuff. I mean, it's *just* a compound fracture. It's not like the NYPD doesn't have a rampant history of abuse and battery.
Oh wait...
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... ality&aq=f
But surely, those 3,070 are just all faking it too. I mean, they're just whining about little things like freedom of speech. Who cares, right?
I'm sure EVERYONE feels better knowing that they can explain their little isolated world is fine and that this isn't *really* a problem. I mean, it's not like YOU are affected by this....
Sorry. Cop running over someone who has a compound fracture and then gets beat on afterwards isn't cool in my book. I mean, perhaps you guys are cool with police brutality and do what you're told by anyone in a uniform but I have this problem with it. Guess I'm just not as enlightened as some of you.

Well, what did the OP think was going to happen by posting a pic of an NYPD guy running over a protester? Especially with TONS of reports and vids of them punching out unarmed citizens and the like, and right after an NYPD officer publicly admits that the police plant drugs on innocent civilians just to get a conviction. Seriously. I've been polite long enough. If people don't like a political opinion that goes against everyone else, then they shouldn't get butt hurt when it goes in a direction they don't want.
If you want to avoid political arguments, don't post flame-bait like the original picture. It's a scooter forum, not a political forum (unless the Mods want to create a separate section for that, which is cool if they want to go that route).

That's like a fish who knows the worm is attached to a hook eating the worm anyways, getting hooked, then blaming the fisherman. The thread managed to survive longer than I thought it would without becoming overtly political. But, yeah, it was destined to be locked from the start because someone was going to take that bait.
