Tomorrow will be the first test for me. It's supposed to clear up so the temps are expected to drop into the 20s overnight. It's supposed to be upper 20s when I expect to leave tomorrow. I've been holding off stepping up the gear so I would have something to step up to, but tomorrow will likely be the first appearance of the snow pants.
I've still a couple of levels I step up to. Winter field work, including a January in the Pribilofs (bad) and multiple Januaries in Nebraska (worse), have got me pretty well set up for cold-weather gear. Thank God for Cabelas.

Almost 30 years working as a Land Surveyor have gotten me covered, my co-workers where I work now complain it's cccold when temps have gotten below 50* Just can't understand 'how' I ride in this weather.......heatherkay wrote:

It's the heat that kills me! Not like we really get much here in South Central Pa, but still.
Not this past summer but the summer before, I left the scoot home in lieu of the car with air conditioning more times than not.

So it was 25F when I left today. Ski bibs were actually easier than the long underwear, jeans, wind pants ensemble I was rocking earlier in the season. Then only cold spots were the apples of my cheeks and my nose (need to break out the serious balaclava or ski mask), and the tippy-tips of my fingers (might just have to suck it up).
I think I'm probably going to move up to a FF helmet, but we're entering gift season. I come from a gift-impaired family (nobody wants anything and nobody has any idea what to get anybody) and it drives my family crazy when I buy stuff like that in late November.

Looks like someone needs a scooter cover...TVB wrote:I did not get out of work before dark. I had to scrape the ice off my speedo and mirrors, and was unable to get it all off the seat. Bit of a cold butt by the time I got home. It also took a few tries to get the scooter to start and stay running for more than a second or two. The streets were OK: just wet.
The last two years I made it through Thanksgiving before I had to park the scooter, but this year... between the time change, the short days, my later work hours, and lousy weather already... I may not be able to keep up scooting to work much longer. I know I'll be scooting tomorrow though: the car's still in the shop. :/

36 with a "feels like" of 28. It was very lightly snowing earlier this morning, and has just started to snow again.
It was a nice ride... ended up coming home early because we lost power (thanks to the new hotel that is being built next door... they messed something up hard core, and enough so that the traffic lights in the area were out too!) It was very chilly though, and the thumb on my left hand silk glove liner got caught in the velcro on the collar of my jacket... caught the thread and tore it all the way open, poo. Now I need new silk glove liners.

Started out in the 60s today, but the rains have come. Dropping into the 30s this evening, and dreary for a day or two.
Instead of taking advantage of the warmer temps and going for a ride, I hung the wreaths on all the windows of the house. All 21 of 'em. Yep. Mostly from inside the house, where you have to do a Marine-drill-team ritual of raising and lowering both sashes and the triple-track storms and screens to hang the wreath on the hooks on the top of the outside frames, then reverse the process to close 'em all up. Boy, are my index fingertips sore.

Yeah I've ridden in 27 since relocating to Colorado... that was pretty cold for a Florida guy. But all this snow has made it impossible. So tempting, but I'm not that stupid!Tocsik wrote:It's 18 degrees this morning. Fahrenheit.
Tomorrow's high is supposed be 10.
There's about 8 inches of snow on the ground and 2 - 5 more falling tonight with temps in the single digits.
Guess I'm not ridin' for a while.
Tomorrow's forecast on weather.com included the words "bitterly cold."

Some people can break a crowbar in a sandbox.
Last Thursday we had rain, then overnight we had subfreezing temps. There wasn't much water on the roads, so they were almost safe for scooting. But not quite. I felt one tire or the other briefly lose traction a few times, so I parked the scooter and walked the rest of the way to work. (Since I was actually headed to the gym to swim a few laps before work, I had time.) I retrieved the scooter later in the day, after the sun had cleared the roads of ice.
Temps in the 40s made this weekend scootable again, and I made it all the way to work today with no difficulty (just nervous wherever the pavement was wet). But with wet roads today and subfreezing temps expected again tonight, I'm looking ahead to taking the cage.

I'm actually going to try this this year! Not the racing part, just the ice riding part. A bunch of the guys have a separate set of studded tires they mount up and I've convinced them to let me try their different bikes. I canNOT wait! It's been so freakin' warm here, I probably won't get a chance 'til February.babblefish wrote:You mean you don't want to do this?![]()

It was actually colder up here in the Valley! And I think a bit colder in the San Gabriel Valley, where 30,000 people still have no power. Yikes.Skootz Kabootz wrote:38 degres overnight in LA? Wha? Well, I think I found my limit, without proper equipment, it is 28 degrees. Today I tried to go to the store in 20 degree temps. (15miles) and only lasted for 3 miles before I had to turn around. I need a full-face helmet and heated gloves, or liners. What kind of helmet do others use in below freezing temps?

I saw that it was supposed to be 16F last night, and I had a bad moment wondering if I was going to be hard enough to ride today. But when I woke up, joy! there was snow, so that made my decision for me. Good choice, too. A dusting of snow is enough to make everyone slide around but is evidently not enough to make them drive slower.

21 Degrees
It is cooler than normal or to be expected in north Texas this week.
Standing 'feels like' temps today: 21 degrees when I left for work and 30 degrees when I came home... and I wasn't standing still in between!
Little extra gear including flannel lined jeans, my River Road Taos gloves, Postale Corrazzo jacket with fleece vest liner & a long sleeve fleece jacket under that layered over one short & one long sleeved shirt. Actually felt the back of my head getting chilled as I still ride with a half helmet although I had on my Loki. Feet were fine with one extra layer of liner ski socks under my regular socks under my Oakley over the ankle boots. Hey – it all worked fine!
Don’t think I would have enjoyed riding more than 12-15 miles without a break!

I dreamed last night that I woke up and looked out the window, and saw a few inches of snow on the ground.
This morning I actually woke up and looked out the window, and saw about an inch of snow on the ground, still coming down, with slush in the street. The temperature is about 25ºF, and isn't forecast to reach above freezing until Sunday, so this stuff isn't going anywhere in the immediate future.
Hope the car starts.

I rode the Reflex into work for the first time yesterday, and it wasn't too bad with the heated glove liners and my muffs from the Blur. I also very quickly asked Santa for some heated grips and an eBay miracle happened within minutes.
I think that we are getting some dry sunshine on Sunday so I'm gathering my dependable riding buddies and heading out for one last group ride in Detroit. It might be just me, but it's bad to have a new (to you) scooter this time of year. Love the Reflex power!

What was New Year's here?
65 F, sunny, with a small breeze. Tons of two-wheels out. Nuts! I can't believe it's been such a mild winter so far here, the first winter I have my scoot
The next week or so is forecast to be mid-50's to low 60's during the day, mid 30's to low 40's at night, with two days of light showers. I'll take it!!
...I'm also still kind of waiting for it to start crushing all my dreams and Old Man Winter to get REAL grouchy....

It was just a hair over seasonal norms on 12/31, so I convinced seven others to follow me on the West Side's Best Ride.
Today and tomorrow, Nashville gets some winter -- low-to-mid 30sF highs, close to teens at night!
Then, back to more normal temps, again.

The 31st was unseasonably nice, with a bit of sun, and clear and dry roads. I took a lap around nearby Reeds Lake, knowing it would be the last for a while. As forecast, the 1st brought clouds, then, rain, then a few inches of snow. More today. I'm looking ahead with grim determination to a few months without either scootering or days off from work.

Like many others have mentioned, so far it's been unseasonably warm and sunny this "winter" in Chicagoland.
That's all started to change as the temp dropped sharply today and we had our first real snow ... about 1".
However, I did manage to get out for a short 1 hour ride yesterday. I've always had a goal of riding my MC or scoot every month throughout a running year. I haven't made it thus far, but I now have 11 straight months under my belt. All I need is one semi-reasonable riding day in Feb.

It's gonna be in the 60's for most of this week!
An unbelievably beautiful morning today with a blood-red sunrise. We've had a lot of wind lately so the air is crystal clear and the mountains look they are about 3 feet away.
It's nice to be back on the scooter after the huge snowstorm we had the Wednesday before Christmas.

Before New Years' was great - 62 or so degrees. Since then, we've had two or three days of temps in the 30s with wind - 20mph/35mph gusts. I bailed on the New Years' Polar Bear ride, even. The wind stopped, finally, but it dropped to 17 overnight. Fortunately, later in the week looks like high 50s, so I'm ridin'.

Michele and Gretchen both rave about theirs... and how impressed they were with the service they got from the CEO (both ladies got a call from her). I asked Michele if she thought she was going to be warm enough in that jacket ('cause where we were riding, there are some short stretches that don't see sunshine for months during the winter, so it can be 20-30F colder than the ambient temp), and she said, "Oh, yes -- I use it as my winter coat, too!"ericalm wrote:Nice post! Oklahoma City is also having the crazy unseasonably warm and sunny weather. It's not supposed to get below 35 until Saturday, and highs will be in the 60s Thursday and Friday. I feel silly scooting home in my insulated coveralls, but 38 degrees is too chilly for the morning ride without the extra layer.
The bad part about Oklahoma is the "wind sweeping down the plains". When we have sustained 25 MPH winds, people here say it's just "breezy", because they are used to frequent gusts at 50 MPH.
Coming from Rhode Island, my kids are still upset about warm weather at Thanksviging ("This just isn't right"), a lack of cold for Christmas, they say that wearing a sweater for 50 degree weather is "a bad habit", and laugh at the weathermen saying that we will need a heavy winter coat when it gets to the low 40s. My kids love to go out and play when the temperature is in the single digits, and they have the clothes to comfortably stay out for hours.
My wife says that everyone should spend a November on the east side of New England to appreciate the sun, and not having days where it gets dark at 4 PM.
