Getting the cast off is the best part. I went from an over the elbow cast to one just halfway up my forearm. Feels SO much better.dakotamouse wrote:wishing you a speedy recovery. I see the doc on friday and hope to get this damned cast off! It's beginning to feel like my skin is crawling!
Also, doc tells me that the PT will be minimal since I didn't have any ligament damage. But I will be doing as much PT as he recommends. I tore all the ligaments in my ankle earlier this year playing basketball. The PT helped that tremendously, so I can attest to the importance of doing it.

I am stupid
So, I totally crashed on the way to work this morning... a beautiful misty/almost rainy morning here in San Diego.
Let's run through this little exercise in humility, shall we?
1. Which model and displacement (CCs) scooter was crashed? Color?
Buddy Blackjack 150cc - black (now MOSTLY black)
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur?
The crash was 110% rider error... 8:00 am rush hour. I got upset at the poor driving habits of another commuter, and wasn't focused on driving..
I misjudged my left turn and steered into the curb at about 4 mph (after breaking) I was going to turn back into the lane but I didn't want to steer into a car/truck. I'd like to say the rain had something to do with it, but it did not.
3. Could the crash have been avoided? What will you do differently next time?
There was no reason for this crash other than me being stupid. I need to shrug off the little annoyances, and focus on riding safely.
4. Was the rider injured? What type of protective gear or clothing was the rider wearing?
No injuries really. I lightly scraped my knee and forearm. I was wearing a modular f/f helmet, a riding jacket, and gloves. My khakis and dress shoes don't really count as protective gear.
5. What was the damage to the scooter?
I scraped the front/lower right side along the curb. I imagine some sanding and a little black primer/matte black paint will fix it up fine.
I'll give the bike a good going over at lunch today to make sure I didn't destroy anything else.
6. Cost of repairs, if any?
Cost of primer/paint... we'll see how the inspection goes. Possibly new plastics if the paint doesn't look very good.
7. How much (weeks, months, years) riding experience does the rider have? Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neither?
I have about a month of riding under my belt.
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course?
No. I signed up for the October 14th session when I got the scooter. I wanted to have time to practice.
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner?
Yes.
10. How fast was the rider going?
Again, from the stop light - through the turn, into the curb... after breaking, I probably hit at about 3-4 mph. However, this was enough to send me into a roll (knee to forearm, tucked my head and landed on my back).
11. How far was the rider from home?
15 miles give or take... I was about a quarter of a mile from my office.
So that's it... the moral of the story is "Don't be dumb." Also, now I have to leave for work early for the next year so I don't see any of the same people... LUCKILY the embarrassment was the worst thing to come of all this.
EDIT - It's also my birthday today! maybe I'll see about replacement panels as a present.
Ride safely boys and girls,

On your birthday! Well, that sucks but of course it could have been much worse (little consolation, I know).
Glad you're okay.

Re: Who's Crashed?
1. Which model and displacement (CCs) scooter was crashed? Color?
2006 Buddy 125 Sunset Orange
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur?
Not sure. It felt like the scoot kind of stopped all of the sudden, next thing I knew the scoot was on the ground and I was standing above it. I think either the transmission downshifted? Or the brake was stuck? Or maybe the wheels just slipped? Morning, about 9:30.
3. Could the crash have been avoided? What will you do differently next time?
I'm not sure, I'm going to see if I can diagnose the problem or take it into the shop.
4. Was the rider injured? What type of protective gear or clothing was the rider wearing?
Just a couple scratches on the chin. Wearing an open face helmet with visor, gloves, light jacket, jeans, sneakers.
5. What was the damage to the scooter?
Just some scratches on the body panels.
6. Cost of repairs, if any?
Not sure yet.
7. How much (weeks, months, years) riding experience does the rider have? Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neither?
2 years and 4 months daily city commuting with no accidents. I have an endorsement on my driver's license.
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course?
Yes.
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner?
Yes.
10. How fast was the rider going?
~5mph
11. How far was the rider from home?
3 blocks.

I kinda hate getting notification on this post. When it shows up in my email I can't help but say "AH S@it!!!"
I'm still going to rehab to get my hand in working order and my scoot is still in the shop. Parts are on back order....they say.
No way, no how, do I want anyone to have to go through a crash situation. No matter how small or big. It just plain sucks. After going through a miserable summer up here we finally have a beautiful indian summer and my bike is in the shop......crap.
I know....there is always next year.....but I wanna ride now!!!

Down she goes
1. Which model and displacement (CCs) scooter was crashed? Color?
Buddy 170i silver
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur?
Cager pulled out in front of me around 9:30pm
3. Could the crash have been avoided? What will you do differently next time? Debatable. Maybe stayed home instead of running to the grocery store at 9:30 in the evening.
4. Was the rider injured? What type of protective gear or clothing was the rider wearing? Road Rash! I was wearing a helmet. Shorts, t-shirts, and the equivalent to flip flops. Deep cut in the pad of my right hand that needed glued back together. Rotator cuff strain. Not very pretty.
5. What was the damage to the scooter?
Yes! Poor Buddy.
6. Cost of repairs, if any? Just a little over $1800
7. How much (weeks, months, years) riding experience does the rider have? Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neither?
1 day! It was my second full day on my scooter.
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course? no but I'm now scheduled to take it this month.
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner? yes
10. How fast was the rider going? 20-25mph
11. How far was the rider from home? less than a mile
Heres the story. I was going up hill on a wide road. A car pulled out from an apartment complex so I started slowing down. That car wasn't the problem. It was the second turner that nearly hit me. I locked up the breaks and the next thing I know I'm standing over my scooter with blood running down my arm. Ugh. Nothing broken. I was so lucky that it wasn't worse. The guy almost drove off until the driver behind flashed his lights and pulled over. The witness was incredibly helpful. The driver of the car didn't want to call the police. I was in shock. I didn't know what to do. The witness refused to not take action. He called the police and took care of everything.
I had just picked up my scooter a little under 40 hours before I went down. I'm a brand new rider. No experience. It was quite a shock. I will never get on my bike again with out full armor.

Man, what a crummy introduction to scooting! Very glad you are not more badly injured. I predict you will now become a better rider faster as a result of this unfortunate incident. Heal quickly! Big kudos to the witness for being a really good citizen! We should all be so lucky to have someone like that helping us.

Sorry to hear about this! Thanks for sharing the story. I know it must be hard for a new rider. I know it's pretty painful damaging a new scooter.
Sad to say, many riders crash within the first week.

Soo less than 2 months ago on the second day of school, I crashed =(
I was riding through my university to get some breakfast. The roads are horrible, tons of bumps, potholes, and other crap trying to drop me. I was riding in the left lane, the right lane was stopped because of cars pulling into the parking lot. I needed to be in the right lane to pull into the restaurant which was up ahead. I could have waited to move into the right lane, but I turned shortly after passing all the stopped cars. when I was switching lanes I noticed the other lane was like 4 inches higher at the part I was crossing over.. my tires couldn't 'jump' the gap and I went down,.. I knew I was going down when I saw the height differential but I didnt have time to react.
1. Which model and displacement (CCs) scooter was crashed? Color?
50cc buddy, red/black
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur?
it's mostly my fault cause it's an avoidable hazard, it's probably been like 1 year since I've ridden on that section of road though, it happened around 10am
3. Could the crash have been avoided? What will you do differently next time?
I need to pay extra attention on roads I'm not 100% familiar on.
4. Was the rider injured? What type of protective gear or clothing was the rider wearing?
I had road rash on both arms near the elbow(left arm not much), one very minor scratch on both palms, road rash on my right knee, small scratches on my back and right shoulder... I was wearing a 3/4 helmet(my head didn't hit the ground), no other gear
5. What was the damage to the scooter?
scratches on most parts on the right side of the scooter
6. Cost of repairs, if any?
not going to repair
7. How much (weeks, months, years) riding experience does the rider have? Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neither?
I have about 3 years experience w/ motorcycle license
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course?
yes
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner?
yes
10. How fast was the rider going?
unsure, around 25-30

The gear makes a big difference. I rode the guard rail a while in my crash and there was a long slash along the right sleeve of my jacket. It didn't cut all the way through the material but without it I would have had a long gash to my arm.
Hope you get back in the saddle and ride again............a little wiser.

Ouch! That is sure learning a basic lesson the hard way. Glad you are back on your feet and have a good attitude about the whole thing.adamschopper wrote:4. Was the rider injured? Sounds like the rest of us weren't doing our job though, if we hadn't already convinced you that shorts and flaps (and no gloves) are a bad idea.

2009 Buddy 125
2:00 on a beautiful sunny day, but it was a day after some heavy rain
By the time I saw the loose gravel, it was too late to avoid
Compound fracture of big toe, dislocation of 2nd toe, slight road rash
Unbelievably, the only damage was a little scuffed up spot on my top case
Been riding for 6 years, and it was my 1st mishap, and was totally avoidable My first scoot was a Kymco Agility 50, and the MSF class was too far away
It my own Buddy that I Pulled a Reege on
I was cruising downhill around 35 MPH going into a left turn
I was 10 miles from home
The accident was definitely rider error for not having my riding boots on. I was just planning to go to buy some veggies at Sprouts a 1/2 mile from my house, and since it was such a beautiful day out, I decided to go for a little cruise. Instead of going the 1/2 mile back home to put on my boots, I didn't. Bad move, since all I was wearing were my brand new blue plaid Polo slip-ons. Luckily I had on a full face, and leather jacket. The face shield got pretty jacked up, and after I washed the leather with a little Lever 2000, you couldn't even tell I went down.
The moral of the story is ALWAYS dress like your gonna Pull a Reege. Even in the summer, I wear gloves & a mesh jacket with protective padding. It only gets hot at stop signs, but as soon as I hit the throttle, it cools right down. I also have a cold weather jacket with padding & liner.
Stay safe my fellow scooterists...And I hope my story makes you seriously think twice about gearing up.

TommyRed reminded me that I never posted this here. I'm copying from the original post, since I was complimented on its narrative.
Still could be MUCH worse.
Add to say that, a month later, no surgery was involved, cast is off earlier than I thought, and I'm back to hurting badly from exercising it. I've overextended/injured the tendon in my ring finger, it hurts more than my broken one. Left wrist finally has mostly healed from the sprain, although my grip is still weak. I have a removable splint and can't scoot until January.LunaP wrote:Lokky and I had just left Scoot Richmond. We went to pull across a sometimes very busy, two big lanes each direction with a wide median in the middle road. Typically he lets me lead, but this time he went first. I followed. I saw him stop in the middle, which is not a policy of mine- I wait for both sides to be clear, then cross all four. For whatever reason that makes me less nervous. Anyhoo- I saw him stopped at the break in the median. I saw the truck coming. At first glance, it looked like PLENTY of room to go, so I didn't slow down. Split second later it occured to me that this was probably not smart, there was probably a reason my boyfriend had stopped. I looked again and it kinda looked like the guy was going at least ten over- at this point I'm almost right at Lokky and need a split second decision.
I have a strong suspicion that if I had hit the throttle and gunned it I could have made it across the two lanes safely, since this was the only car on the road, but I have no way to be sure, and I'm not willing to beat myself up over it. At the point where I decided my choices were either jam the brakes or get t-boned, and grabbed brakes and went down. I didn't get thrown, or skid, but I went down HARD. I've taken it down twice before this- once on my first day because I grabbed too much front brake, and once because an ass slammed on their brakes and stopped for a left turn with no signal, and after breaking for several feet I came damn close to her bumper and dropped it rather than chance a even a 5mph collision. Both times dropped the Buddy but barely scratch it (just the bevel and kickstand) and neither hurt me at all.
This was not like those. I pretty much DOVE into the pavement. I'll admit that I wasn't wearing gloves because it was warm and that was dumb- that's what I have some rash on my left palm. My left hand and knee took the brunt of my fall; my knee is totally raw yet my jeans don't show any kind of mark, which reaffirms my belief that these jeans are going to last forever (it's my favorite pair). My helmet hit, edge of my visor first, and the visor didn't pop off, so I'm impressed I suppose. However, once I was done landing my right hand was curled up under me and searing in pain. I knew something was wrong in the back of my head. I wanted to be optimistic.
The truck passed- but like 2 or 3 other cars stopped, I think, in the time it took me to convince myself to move, then stand up. Once I had my wits again, and the bike started, we drove back to Scoot Richmond so I could wash my bloody hand and rest a minute. I was trying to be optimistic, telling myself MAYBE I'm being a ninny and I'm okay, the pain will subside soon. No. The act of washing my hands sent me into a whole new world of pain. I started crying. Sappy things make me cry. Pain does not make me cry.
So I'm lucky that SR is awesome, locked the Buddy up for me so we could leave, and I have a PCP that is open til 8 with an xray suite. They know of a close by ortho-specific clinic that is also open late. Who was able to tell me, unlike the NP and my dr office- exactly how bad it is- I have a fracture just above my pinky knuckle, that comes specifically from jamming my finger/hand into the pavement in a perpendicular manner- which, correct me if I'm wrong, but gloves most likely couldn't have saved me from. This kind of fracture is at the beginning of the bone, and causes multiple cracks from the end down into the bone- if I could draw a picture, I would (or remember the name, I'd google and link). I won't know for sure until I see a hand specialist, but I may need surgery to put a pin or screw in to make sure it heals correctly- if it heals unevenly, it will rub away at the cartilage in the joint and make me all arthitis-y eventually.
Cast goes past my wrist so I can't drive myself anywhere, I have to go back to Lokky and my mom helping me. I'll be a gimp for my first rallyAnd currently, the low-dose hyrdocodone the PCP gave me isn't doing shit.
BUT
I'm not blood giblets, or legless. Sailor Scoot is fine, aside from maybe needing some new footpegs and bezel (entirely cosmetic). At this point and time I'm not missing any work, I can still work a register.
So all in all, I"ll go ahead and say I came out on top, given the circumstances.
Still could be MUCH worse.

So, I'm glad to say that my body is mostly intact. Aches, pains, and muscle spasms for the next few weeks are a blessing, considering I could have been paralyzed or killed. As a result, I'm chilling on my couch, enjoying the benefits of prescription narcotics, and dealing with the insurance companies and Sheriff's department.ericalm wrote:
1. Which model and displacement (CCs) scooter was crashed? Color?
Buddy Blackjack (poor BJ, it suffered so much)
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur?
The crash was not due to rider error. 3 cars in front of me slammed on their breaks (for no apparent reason), causing a small fender bender in front of me. I slammed on my brakes. Unfortunately, the lady in the Jaguar behind me did not hit the breaks, and then ran her front end over me and propelled my scoot into the next lane of traffic hitting another car.
3. Could the crash have been avoided? What will you do differently next time?
I don't think so. I was literally just about to change lanes (from left lane to right) when everyone hit the breaks. I believe the woman in the Jag was texting or dialing a phone number based on the story she was telling the police. The best part of the story is that she got out of the car, jumping up and down (while I was still smushed under her front end, her front tire was against, but not on, my pelvis). She screamed "I don't know what to do!!" I flipped up my visor and said "Ma'am! Please back your car off of me!"
4. Was the rider injured? What type of protective gear or clothing was the rider wearing?
I got a ride to the hospital. My legs have some serious abrasions, and a ton of bruises. My rear-end suffered the worst of the road rash (pants and underwear were shredded on my butt. I refused to get off the ground until they got my scooter cover off my bike so I could cover up for modesty). I was wearing a Modular helmet, gloves, textile jacket with armor. Unfortunately, I was only wearing slacks and dress shoes. Had I worn motor cycle pants I would have only been bruised. Based on the dress slacks, they had to pick gravel and wool fibers out of my backside with tweezers and a scrub brush.
5. What was the damage to the scooter?
The scooter might be totaled. The headlight/casing busted when it hit the other car. The chassis is smashed up (compacted) and the engine was leaking oil. rear tire was flat. That's about all I could tell while I was making my way into the ambulance.
6. Cost of repairs, if any?
I haven't heard back from the claims department. I imagine they will consider it totaled. I bought the scoot used and for $2,000 value, I imagine the damages will be $1 to 2k at least.
7. How much (weeks, months, years) riding experience does the rider have? Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neither?
3 months riding. I have my permit.
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course?
Yes. I just haven't gone back to the DMV for my full endorsement.
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner?
Yes, sad to say. This is the first vehicle I've owned outright since I traded in my '95 accord 6 years ago.
10. How fast was the rider going?
I was not moving, having just landed on my chest after laying the bike down. The Jaguar was going about 15 to 20 mph but she was breaking when she hit me.
11. How far was the rider from home?
The accident was just over a mile from my house on a street I drive every day during rush hour.

I'm always so hesitant and fearful when clicking links to this thread!
Sorry to hear about the crash. Wow. Heal up!
From the sound of things, there's a good chance the frame of the scooter is compromised. Fingers crossed, though.

Who's Crashed?
I am also a firm believer in gear. I was riding a motorcycle during a rainstorm on I-495 in Maryland one night. Some highway engineer thought it would be OK to put a metal bridge expansion joint going in-line with traffic. When the front tire hit the joint then the steering went limp, I went down and slid for more than 200 ft. With my rainsuit on, my only injury was a slight abrasion to my ankle, because I was wearing tennis shoes instead of boots. My wife said that the rubber rainsuit made it so that I hydroplaned.dakotamouse wrote:I had just picked up my scooter a little under 40 hours before I went down. I'm a brand new rider. No experience. It was quite a shock. I will never get on my bike again with out full armor.
The gear makes a big difference. I rode the guard rail a while in my crash and there was a long slash along the right sleeve of my jacket. It didn't cut all the way through the material but without it I would have had a long gash to my arm.
Hope you get back in the saddle and ride again............a little wiser.

Re: Who's Crashed?
It helps the insurance people figure out who is to blame if you can show that another driver was still moving while you were stopped. I had a less dramatic accident on a motorcycle where the cager and I both wanted to use a one-lane underpass under a railroad track. We met in the middle after a minor impact. My foot ended up barely under her front tire and she had to back off of it. It showed that she was still moving after I had put my foot down.ericalm wrote:

Glad you weren't hurt more seriously. Amazing (and depressing) how many scooters are rear ended while stopped. Whenever I come to a stop in traffic I immediately look behind me to see what is happening. I wouldn't have much time to try to duck to the side but I always have that feeling some airhead is texting away and about to run into me.

Then I grab and release one of the brake levers, flashing my brake light, until at least one car is behind me - or the light changes. I saw that mentioned in a visibility questionnaire I read once.Dooglas wrote:Glad you weren't hurt more seriously. Amazing (and depressing) how many scooters are rear ended while stopped. I bought an inexpensive pair of red led pods (10$ for the pair) that are rigged to rapidly blink in random patterns.
I attached them to either end of the brake light so they will go off whenever I'm on the brakes without needing me to flash them.
I think they may not be strictly legal (I believe there may be a maximum amount of time after you hit the brakes that they are allowed to blink before becoming solid) but I have been given no issue by the cops so far.
