Florida suggestions?

Post by etak »

Happy New Year, all!

My husband and I are thinking of a last-minute vacation to Florida mid-January, just to get away for a week or so before I go back to work at Brooklyn College and we’re stuck here in NYC for the rest of the winter.

We’re not really “Florida” people (e.g., not interested in Disney World and my husband doesn’t swim), but we’re looking for some place warm and sunny and not super expensive where we could rent scooters (preferably >50 cc). I was thinking the Everglades &/or the Keys. Anyone have any suggestions re places to stay, to rent scooters, to go?

Thanks much!

We rented some scoots on a stay on Sanibel Island. Two friends got 50's, and I got a 125 as the Mrs. preferred to ride cupcake.

The Gulf coast side of Florida is where you wanna go if you don't want to go to the keys. There's still some really nice natural beauty around the Naples/Ft. Myers area, short 45 min trip to the everglades, and the beach of course. It is "season" down here so it would be a bit more crowded than it would be in say May, but everywhere in Florida will be that way.
Fort Myers Beach is a good suggestion as well as Sannibel/Captiva if you dig that island feel. Ft. Myers beach has a few scooter rental places but the best is run by MB's own Hard1 (aka Mark) Quicky Scooters http://www.quickyscooters.com/....
Good luck on your vacation where ever you decide to go.

I agree. This is what I would do. And what I am going to do next month.

If you enjoy good music, open air and other very unique bars (words don't do that justice ... you have to experience this), excellent food, great weather, very scenic sunsets, interesting street entertainers (Mallory Sq. at sunset), some sightseeing (Hemingway's house, key deer at Pine Key, Mel Fischer's Atocha museum) and a great scooter riding atmosphere, I'd recommend Key West.

We made a trip there a couple of years ago and are heading back in February or March.

Here's an old post thread that may give you a few ideas.

Thanks much for all the suggestions and info. Very helpful.
We've decided to rent a car, spend a couple of days seeing the Everglades (from east to west) and then spend a week on Sanibel Island, taking day trips from there. Our (22 yr old) daughter decided to come, so we may skip the scooters this trip, and just rent bicycles, as the island is supposed to be very bike friendly/accessible.

If you are going around April, alligator mating season starts about then, lots of 'gator activity and you can hear the bulls call for miles. The Everglades have so much flora and fauna don't forget your camera's and video recorders.

The island is beautiful anytime of the year and should give you a very memorable time for all. Hopefully it hasn't gotten to touristy over the years.
