120/70 12 Whitewall Tire Suggestions? brand/treads

Post by 50CC Cape Cod »

I have 120/70 & 130/70 12's on my scooter. I noticed that Scooterlounge listed the Buddy 170I with WW 120/70 12s. Also same scooter on Genuine has 3.5/10? Am looking for that style with vintage tread pattern. Will be used only up to 50mph for general around town use. What brand is stock on the 170I or any suggestions. Found the Shinko listed as an option. How wide is the stock whitewall on the Genuines? Thanks.

I would suggest that there are no longer any whitewalls on the market that are worth considering. I believe the 170's come with Prima Whitewalls. I made the mistake of buying one and I'll never do that again. For me, they were frighteningly slippery in cold or wet weather, which is about 75% of the riding I do. Others have had bad experience with them as well from a longevity standpoint. I didn't keep mine on long enough to find out what the longevity would be.

I second pdxrita. The Prima whitewalls that came on my scoot are only good in the dry. I am switching to Michilin S1's when I get a job.

Ditto here. Quality whitewalls are a thing of the past. I eventually just switched my St. Tropez to backwalls. Better safe than... er, ok I got no rhyme. Just avoid whitewalls. Particularly the Primas. My rear Prima lasted me all of 1500 miles before it needed changing. Ridiculous.

There are a few, Conti has one, Shinko SR723 looks retro with the tread and white wall and is on sale on a few sites. Can pick up a set front & rear from $80-$100 range. Since will have limited speed use max 50MPH and yearly miles thought may be way to to replace the original with a little more style. Original, Cheng Shen nylon tires 11 year old with under 1000miles since noticed some surface cracks running along the rim area so thought may need to replace. Read on forum someone was tired of the SHINKO WW so did not know if from looks or how they are on the road. Any idea how much the labor usually runs to change over a set of tires on a scooter and road review of the SHINKO SR723. If do not pick these will probably go with blackwall Conti or Michelin line.
