170i Cooler position?
When I saw the 170i this past week, to me it looked like the positioning of the oil filter & cooler was an after-thought. My concern is someone tampering with it when I park at the Mall. In the showroom I didn't kneel down on the floor to look at it, but what secures that filter from someone wanting to make mischief?

Is someone tampering with the oil cooler system really that much of a concern? I've really never had anyone screw with the mechanical bits of a bike no matter what machine I rode, from Triumph Bonneville to Moped. Most vandals will just mar the seat or perhaps kick it over. 99% of the ignorant public will avoid any mechanical bits out of uneducated fear of anything "mechanical" looking.
"Earth" without Art is just "Eh"...

Yeah I have to agree. Somebody messing with it would have to have tools or screw with it and do damage by sheer brute force. That just sounds preposterous to me. Not impossible, I suppose, but still.neotrotsky wrote:Is someone tampering with the oil cooler system really that much of a concern? I don't think you have much to worry about. Other than a lower clearance.

^^^ My only thought as well. Though genuine did think to put a small "bash plate" under the assembly.jprestonian wrote:I'd just caution against trying to ride off sidewalk curbs onto the street. Disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah if anyone is going to mess with a bike they always go for the tires anyway. But don't sweat it...or still their battery ( one member here had that happen)
Speed is only a matter of money...How fast do you want to go?

I know people that've had their mirrors messed with. Half of it turned out to be other club members playing pranks, though.

The cooler is the reason I didn't often ride my 170 onto the sidewalk unless there was an access... the bash plate doesn't seem like much protection tbh. I was always afraid of the getting down part, exactly like you said JPres.

I find it to serve the kind of protection that the oil pan on a VR6 Jetta does, which is not much, especially when you hit it with stuffLunaP wrote: The cooler is the reason I didn't often ride my 170 onto the sidewalk unless there was an access... the bash plate doesn't seem like much protection tbh. I have seen motorcycle people check the oil filter/cooler out in the mall parking lot while I was working, only because it's more of a "what they hey-ho is that hanging down there?" than a "I'm gonna mess with whatever this thing is" sort of deal. Most will agree, no one is going to mess with it because they don't really know what it is (and I bet it would be real easy to get prints off of the oil filter!), they're more likely to just do the easy stuff if they're going to be malicious at all.
