My 170 problem, SOLVED!

Post by 2wheelNsanity »

As a few of you know I have had a lugging and learching issue at higher speeds (50mph +) with my 170 for a long time now. Many thought it was the computer, but I wasn't so sure because my engine light never came on like others. Well I did a mini tune-up today which included an oil change, gear oil change, air filter, PIAA headlight, and a new kevlar belt. I didn't change the rollers or adjust the valve lash (did that 1500 miles ago). I did a major cleaning of the CVT and after I put it all back together I went on my shakedown run. After I was confident everything felt ok I ran it at 45mph for about 10 minutes then increased my speed to 50 then 55 then 60. I did this for almost 10 miles and no learching or lugging :D (fingers crossed). Before the belt replacement it would have lagged and learch bad, like the back brakes were being applied off and on. Could my problem have been as simple as a belt?
I hope that the belt is all it was cuz tonight she ran like the "kaze" :D

Dude I hope its solved. I guess belts arent covered in warranty, huh. And it sounds like you do this work yourself. If this is the case, I may try the same when I need a new belt and rollers soon. Again, I hope that scoot of yours is tip-top again.

belt slippage can defiantly cause loss of top end, and then a sudden speedup as the belt fully grips again. I've never experienced lurching though.

Congrats if it's back to normal again.

My lagging problem is solved. It was the belt, however what puzzles me is my problem started at about 1k on my scooter, maybe the original belt was defective. Well anyway, it sure was cool to fly down the highway at 62mph (72bmph indicated) without any problems :D . Now I can't wait to uprgade a bunch of parts.

Upgrades? I would put a badass front disk, rear shock, and maybe forks. Im not crazy about the Prima pipe. No real performance upgrade, and you may have to re-jet. I dont know the stock tires the 170 comes with, but upgrading those would make a differnce too IMHO.

Ty for the advice on the pipe, which pipe would you suggest (keep in mind my scoot is fuel injected).
My upgrades list:
1. Tires (Michelin S1's)
2. Windscreen
3. NCY performance trany upgrade kit w/1500 spring and 13g dr. pulley sliders
4. Exhaust pipe upgrade
5. NCY adjustable rear shock.

Honestly, Prima quality is suspect. Add to that it doesnt help much in performance. Not many choices after that.

I go back and forth on the pipe. I like the sound, but I dunno if I $200 like the sound.

Probably will pick up a windscreen and definitely want new tires at some point. the whitewalls look fancy but I can tell the difference on any other kind of tire.
