Rides Part II

Post by pcbikedude »

1. What was your first 2 wheel (MC or scooter)?
2. What was your first car?
3. What was or is your favorite car/mc/scooter?

1)I had a Wards minibike as a teen.
2)My first car was a 65 Plymouth Valiant Signet. It cost me a whole 100 bucks back in '74. It was a first class piece of crap. But it was mine for 2 years
3)My favorite ride was my 2nd car. '72 Olds Cutlass Supreme 350 engine 4 barrel carb, air conditioning, Turbo Hydromatic Transmission Woohoo that car could fly. My dad knew I was going to college in San Diego. He wanted me to have a reliable car so he co-signed a loan that I had to make payments on. I went everywhere in that car, work, dates, home, etc.

First bike was a 1983 Yamaha Midnight Virago. I immediately de-cruisered it and made it into a Sport Touring bike. Wish I still had it.

First car was a 1969 Ford Torino GT. Wish I still had that as well.

Favorite bike is still my BMW K100RS. I've put tens of thousands of miles on it and the love is still there.

Good times, good times.

My first 2 wheeler was a bicycle; all I remember about it was that it had racing bike handlebars, you know, the ram's horn style. I was so cool on that bike. I kept that sucker for years.

First car was a '60 Bug. Less than 10 years old and cost me all of $125, if memory serves, I only had for about a year. Got rid of it shortly after I made the mistake of thinking I could make it home with the oil light on.

And my favorite vehicle is easy. Carmen, the '60 VW Karmann Ghia with the green dragon painted on the hood that cost 300 frogskins (honest, that's what the For Sale sign said) God, I loved that car. You could stick your hand between the roof and the top of the rolled up window. It started about half the time without a jump, but when you hooked a 12 volt battery up to its 6 volt starter that baby would spin! The headlights came on most of the time when you pulled out the switch and the seats were like Barca-loungers. It had 100 some-odd thousand miles on it when I bought it. I then put 10-15 thousand miles on it and sold it to my roommate who put 10-15 thousand more miles on it. It was the kind of car I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy but I think every kid should own at least once.

1. A 1960 BMW 250 - stolen before I had it a month.
2 & 3. A 1964 baby blue Triumph Spitfire - sold in 1967 for girlfriend considerations - should have kept the car and dumped the GF. I loved that car and was fortunate to survive some of the crazy rides.

1. First MC: Monster of a brown & gold early '80s Honda Gold Wing 1100. Weighed about a million pounds. Got it free from a friend who had 4 bikes. Didn't run all that well; I hardly rode it. Gave it to another friend about a year later.

2. First car: 1980 Volvo 240GLE. Kind of a classic now. The famous Volvo safety features—rare in 1980—probably kept me from getting killed when I got hit in the driver's door by a brand new BMW doing at least 60. While I was still in the hospital, the driver (son of rich and permissive parents) bragged to his classmates that he was doing 90. He totaled a couple more BMWs before eventually killing himself by rolling a Corvette convertible while driving home, drunk, from spring break. Karma's a bitch. Half the cars in the city soon sported bumper stickers that said, "Buckle up: Do it for Tony!" Not "do it for the many people he injured or endangered with his repeated reckless behavior." Okay, so I'm still a little bitter about that one...

3. Favorite car: 1968 Mercury Cougar XLR. Ugliest green color ever, kind of like this (only I had black vinyl top). Best described as "dull lime" or possibly "electric avocado." Put it in storage after persistent engine problems, going through several radiators and thermostats, and so on. Couple years go by and I tell my parents I've got some extra scratch and want to fix it up. Too late—they'd sold it without telling me. Not too bitter about that one...anymore. But if I ever want to buy a classic piece of gas-guzzling American muscle car, I'd get another one.

Sounds like Tony was a real dick. I remember that green on those Cougars, pretty strange color.

The first motorcycle I rode was Honda 90 sport. Actually, I was the terrified passenger once before twisting the throttle myself. I think I was 15 or 16. The first motorcycle I owned was a 1980 Honda Hawk, bough new for, I think, about $1200. Beautiful bike.

First car was a Fiat 124 coupe bought used (never buy a used Fiat). It lasted less than a year and was traded, along with its leaky head gasket, for a new, bright orange '71 124 Spider. That was a nice car. Favorite all time car was a 1976 Alfetta Coupe, although my ' 98 A4 turbo was a close 2nd.

Favorite bike is my current Ducati GT-1000, but if we're being nostalgic, the original Ducati GT that I rode in the mid '70's was pretty special, as was a Norton Commando. I had two good friends when I was living in New Jersey then. Both had a stable of bikes that I rode regularly. That early GT is the main reason I fell in love with the current Ducati. And that Norton was just nasty.

1. 1982 Honda Magna VF750C. Not a good starter bike...

2. 1968 VW Bug, which ran for almost exactly one week. #2 was an '86 CRX Si that worked out much better.

3. My favorite is the one I don't have...

I still need to own a car from the 70's, as I've had them from every other decade between 1950 to now!

Bike's I've only covered the 80's through now 8)

1. First bike (that I bought) was a '75 Yamaha RD250. Ended up roadracing it.

2. First car; 1943 military Jeep made by Ford. During WWII they were made by Willys, Ford and Bantam...NOT just Willys. Got it in two pickup loads and it left in 2 pickup loads...never got it together.

3. 1978 (I think) Yamaha SR 500. What a GREAT bike!! Was everything I wanted...except long-lasting...cam lobes flattened out every 10,000 miles.

3. 1963 Vespa V90...my first italian scooter.

First two wheel (other than many bicycles) would be my 06 Buddy. 8)

First car was a 72 Ford Pinto. Those who are old enough to remember the history of that car might be interested to know that I totaled it by slamming it back end first into a telephone pole. I was t-boned by a car in an intersection which sent me spinning and ultimately backwards into said pole. Fortunately for me, my Pinto did not explode from the rear impact.

Favorite car was my 1980 Fiat X1/9 (yes gt1000 I bought it used). I have had many cars since, some I liked a lot, some I hated, but that is still my favorite more than twenty years after I sold it. I acquired another X1/9 not long after that, which was cool but not as cool.

My first powered bike was a Honda 50cc --- “first gear… its all right” ---- “second gear… lean right” ----“third gear…… faster….,”. (Beach Boys)
First car was a 1962 Ford Falcon station wagon, it was my parent’s old car that broke down – I rebuilt the motor and used it for myself.
My favorite car was a Triumph Spitfire set up to run F-Production, ran it for a couple of years on the west coast at club meets.
But now, I have the Buddy 125 going on over a year and a half and still loving it weather and conditions permitting she is my favorite 2 wheel ride.

1. A nifty, thrifty Honda 50

2. A 1958 VW (no gas gauge, wood accelerator pedal, awful heater, 36
horsepower - I loved it)

3. Ural sidecar motorcycle (42 horsepower, it loves back roads on fall
afternoons - okay, I enjoy the Buddy alot but I'd die without the Ural)

Wow, that's yours?! :wha:

If they bring them over in '09 and I can wait that long, the A1 may be my next car. I went to look at the A3 a couple weeks ago and was shocked at how bad the fuel economy is on those. 19/33 or so depending on trim and options. Riding a scoot has spoiled me.

1. I believe it was a 68 Yamaha DT 250. Had lots of fun riding on and off road with it.
2. 62 Rambler. The front seats folded down to make a bed need a 16 yr old need to say more!
3. 72 Suzuki 750 watercooled mc. It was stolen and I new someday it would be a great collectors bike, but then someone else had the same idea.
The Buddy is my first scooter and it has given me miles of great fun.

Big Three...

Post by Roose Hurro »

1. Other than a Schwinn bicycle, none, so far.

2. 1971 Chevrolet Vega... actually, a Frankenstein car built from a '71 and a '74 GT. Held together for three years before a piston-head separation killed it. Ahhh, the adventures I had in that thing! Several trips from North to Southern Cal, and a trip all the way up to Sandpoint, Idaho, and back. On one of the trips down South and back, I had the back end filled to the windows with stuff... books, magazines, and various bits. Even got a speeding ticket, somewhere in Oregon, I believe.

3. Oh, this one's a tuffie... I loved my '69 'Stang with the 302, but I also loved my '97 Honda Civic LX, and have had nothing but satisfaction out of my present ride, a 2000 Toyota Echo. But, truth to tell, my favorite car has yet to be built... I'd love to get hold of either a '58 KarmanGia, a '50 to '54-55 Nash Rambler, or a '53 Hudson Hornet... all with the intent to build a hot-rod/custom set of wheels. As for a motorcycle, one of the early Honda Dreams would be nice. For a scooter? This! for a more modern MC/Scoot, I've taken something of a shine to the Harley Davidson Nightster (fits me like a glove), and the Vespa GTS still stirs my blood the most, scooterwise.

Yep, I am on the lookout for my "next favorite car," which it appears is probably not yet being built. It will probably be small, loaded with techie features, and get awesome MPGs. The Audi A1 is a contender, but I'll have to wait for '09 to get one. Or maybe I'll just buy a "frymobile"—a Mercedes or VW diesel converted to run on vegetable oil. Yum.

Yeah, I love that Honda Dream! I constantly have an eye out for one in my area, but am not going to drop $3K on it. And I almost bought a used Stella the other day, against my better judgement which tells me to wait until we hear if CA will be getting new ones.

My first scooter wasn't really a scooter. It was a Piaggio moped. My wife and I bought it in a garage sale and it never ran (though we did pedal it around a little). We gave it away to a friend who knew more about mechanics than we did.

My first motorbike that actually RAN was a 1956 BSA Bantam Major (150cc two-stroke). Only, it didn't run very well when I got it, and it soon quit running altogether. Ironically, the one place in Houston that I thought could help me get it back on the road (*cough*BritishUSA*cough*) told me outright that they "didn't work on two-strokes" and that even if they did, they wouldn't know where to get Bantam parts. Sorry, I digress. I'm a little bit bitter about that, even after 12 years.

My first car was a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle. Her name was Babette the Bitchin Bug, and I wept terribly when I lost her to an engine fire less than a year after we met.

My favorite car or motorcycle? I'd have to say that I've been dreaming about an early 70's BMW R75/5 and/or a late 60's BMW R60/2 with a sidecar for the past 10 years at least, and if I could pick anything, that would be it. Though now that I think about it, maybe a BMW R90s with a sidecar would be fun, too....

1. Early '60's 350 Kawasaki Enduro to the best of my recollection (41 years ago).

2. Hmm. First car I drove regularly was Mom's 1956 Olds 98 Holiday Coupe with a 357 "Rocket" V8. My cousin and I put dual Rochester 4-bbls on it and headers with cutouts that were controlled by a lever under the dash. Great for going to football games. First car I owned was a 1965 Dodge Dart 270 4-door sedan with a 225 slant six and aftermarket A/C.

3. Favorite car/bike? Geez. How to choose? 1965 BMW R-50? 1966 Impala SS with a fuel-injected Corvette engine? 1956 Harley Hydraglide? 1969 Plymouth Satellite 4-door sedan with a 426 Hemi with an 1150 cfm Holley dual pumper?

ECS
Yes, that is my scooter.
Yes, I wear a helmet and a FIRSTGEAR armored jacket.
No, I'm not embarrassed to be seen riding it.
Yes, that is an NRA sticker on the fender.

I love these as well. Even the early-to-mid '80s R series... This is why I need an extra garage, to fill with 2-wheelers of all sorts.

OT: Shout out to Denton, TX! I used to hang out there quite a bit back in the day and have a lot of fond memories from Rubber Gloves, the Argo, Mr. Gatti's on the square, UNT parties, etc.
