Blackjack Buddy Leaking Gas

HELP!!! What is this part????? Leaking gas when my 2009 Blackjack Buddy is parked and running... It seems to be cracked at the seam. It's on the right side under the side pannel. PLEASE Help me figure this out!!! The number on the part is: 980415 Thanks G-dine

Checking online through the microfische stuff... I can't find that part number. Perhaps a picture would serve better? Perhaps it's the petcock

Could be petcock, fuel filter or overflow canister.

That's the fuel filter? I picked one up Saturday from my local dealer but it's just a regular little in-line plastic fuel filter.

Good luck g-dine. Dig in there and see what's going on.

Has the scooter stalled? You may have just overfilled the tank and need to dry out the canister.

I did over fill the tank once. It has never stalled though.
How do I go about drying it out?

If it's running fine, I would leave it alone. I would go for a ride around the neighborhood to burn off gas.

Once your gas/sloshing has gone below the overflow tube, the leaking should stop. If the scooter conks out, you're still in your neighborhood and you can walk it home to figure out how to either take it apart or leave it in the sun to evaporate.

Make sure to NEVER overfill the tank. ALWAYS keep it a couple inches below the lip of the tank. If you have one of those devices that prevent you from putting the gas nozzle in too far, fill it up to the bottom of that device and no further.

It started leaking when it was at a half a tank and it only leaks when it is running for a bit.

If you put the scooter up on the center stand and run it for a while, will it start leaking?

Yes, but you have to pull back on the throttle to give it some rpms.

The evap cannister should not normally contain liquid gasoline. If it does, you should be able to drain the gas out and perhaps further blow some air through it to dry it out. I am somewhat more puzzled about why gasoline is leaking from the cannister. Is the cannister cracked? If so, it will need to be replaced (perhaps you could obtain a replacement from one of the scofflaws who has removed their evap system

). The evap system is basically a replacement for the tank vent and overflow tube on previous Buddys. The only reason any liquid gasoline should be involved is if the tank overflows from overfilling when fueling or by laying the scooter on its side.

It might just be spitting out gas that's collected there that shouldn't be there. Gas can get in there, but there shouldn't be any sort of constant flow (even a dribble) into the canister. There's almost no way for that to happen. Almost.

I'd pull the canister. Look in the gas tank and make sure it's not too full—a few inches of space on top. Run the engine without the canister attached and see if any gas is coming through the evap hose that feeds into the canister. If the canister was somehow flooded, there might be a title in there, but it should't be a flow and should stop. Then dry out the canister. (I think you can pull it apart and dry out the charcoal filter—anyone? I haven't tried to pul that open.) Reattach. Should be good.

The only way for gas too get in there should be via a valve at the top of the gas tank. This happens when the tank is overfilled and gas either splashes in there (which can happen when the scoot is being ridden regularly) and/or when the gas and vapors expand when they get warm, create pressure in the tank and push the gas through the evap hose.

If your gas cap is vented (small holes in the top or sides of a metal cap), then chances are the gas just splashed in there somehow when the tank was full.

If gas is somehow getting in there all the time or trickling into the evap system, there might be some kind of issue in the tank.
