50CC Scooter Insurance Companies Which to Use & Premiums

Post by 50CC Cape Cod »

In MA 50CC scooter insurance is optional any ideas which companies are better to use and which to avoid. Also what are the premiums people have found the 50CC scoots are averaging.

You'll get 20 different responses, but the one thing they'll all have in common is: call around. Just call up a bunch of places and get a lot of quotes. If you have car or home insurance, or something else, a bundle plan may be cheaper with your current provider. A lot of people recommend going beyond minimum liability plans, in case of theft or an accident on your part, for example.

Prices vary based on: your age, how many years you're driving, did you take a MSF safety course, your zip code and local statistics, whether you plan to garage the scooter or not, how many miles a year you ride, did you do any modifications, etc.

I was amazed when I was buying insurance for my 50 and 220 cc's at how drastically the prices varied between some different companies. (Interestingly, on many plans the 50cc and 220 cc were the *SAME PRICE* - the factors listed above were weighted higher than the CC. I'm in California.)

So the most practical advice you can get is:

1) spend a day or two and just call all of the big companies (Geico, Progressive, All-State, Farmers, etc, etc) and then some of those brokerage types (like AIS Insurance).

2) get multiple quotes for various plans (and different level deductibles -- for an extra $15 per year, I had a $250 deductible rather than $500 when I was on my 50cc)

3) Sit down and think about it. Consider what your scooter is worth. ie, for my used 50cc I bought at $1200 total, the upper end plans did not make sense.

Really, there's no other way if you want the 'best' deal.

I just do what my wife tells me. It is easy that way! I think we use Progressive, which is odd, because I am a conservative.

I've been using Geico for my car for about 5 years. Added my Buddy 50cc in Feb. and my Vespa GTV 250 a few days ago. The Vespa was significantly cheaper. Why? Because of where I live. Because I live close to ... A dodgy area of town, and because some er... Ahem, rather dodgy people are riding cheap Chinese scooters and having accidents all over the place... Voila! Insuring a 50cc costs more. So it will also depend where you live etc.

I have Progressive. I got a LU plate for it in MA and it's worth insuring because it covers towing. Whenever my scooter breaks down it gets towed to the nearest Genuine dealer which is in Boston. Insurance is cheap and they probably lose $ on me if I get 2 tow jobs into Boston. ; )

Another vote for Progressive. Initially I just went with them since I've been using them for my car for five years, but secretly I was hoping my hair would look like Flo's when I took my helmet off

I did a custom policy, I think the lowest possible coverage was $90 for the year, I added whatever covers my butt, but no roadside since I have that with Genuine, it came to about $180 for the year, for my 150cc Stella.

You're probably going to get the same general quotes for the same coverage from all companies. When it comes down to the $150-ish a year range, your quotes will probably vary by $15 or so. I'd start with the company you use for car insurance, just because it'll be easiest.

Since we live in a seasonal scooter zone did not know if they have 6 month- 8 month policies? Since you do not have plate tags for a 50CC
that do not have to be turned into the DMV. Progressive had a quote on line for 2 different coverages both around $95 for liability.
