Helmet's Under the Seat

Post by rentonhighlander »

I was considering purchasing a "open faced" helmet and had a couple questions.

1) Will a open faced helmet fit under a Buddy seat? I have a feeling that it won't if it has a face shield on but might fit if it doesn't but would like to know for sure.

2) How accurate are the hat sizes that "Bell" uses for their helmets?

Thanks

I can't speak to under-seat storage on the Buddy, but helmet sizes are a pain to figure out!

I have a Bell Revolver Rally modular helmet that fits me in Large. My HJC full-face helmet is a medium. There are people in this forum that wear both medium and XXL helmets!! Each brand does sizing differently, but each style or helmet model has a different shape. Some will fit the shape of your head better than others. (Likewise, for full or modular helmets, the ones that fit under your seat may surprise you - shape matters).

The best advice, and most annoying, is to go to as many shops you can find and just start trying them on.

For example...

That's a simple visual, but it makes my point: sizing totally depends on the specific model, not just brand, and so does it's ability to fit in your storage or rack.

On my wife's buddy, she easily fits her 3/4 helmet, forget the brand... However, I just went out and tried to fit my helmets in the underseat storage...

First Shoei Neotec XL - too wide to even fit

Second Nolan N102 - XL or XXL - Fits inside with the chinbar open, but with the chin bar up, cannot close the seat...

If you are dead set on only storing your helmet under the seat, you need to find something that does not have a chin bar... No full face, no modular full face, no dirtbike helmets... 1/2 and 3/4's should fit fine... If you want the security of a chin bar, you should get a trunk.

This, in the large size, fits with no problem:

I'm guessing the underseat storage is the same between a Buddy & RH?

I think a Buddy's is longer.

I have no idea how accurate Bell's sizes are, as I don't know my hat size. :)
I have a "large" 3/4 Bell R/T (equivalent to the current "Custom 500" line) which fits under the seat easily, with a face shield attached.

I wear an XS HJC full-face and it fits under my seat. Nothing extra fits of course, unless it is something like gloves that can be stuffed inside the helmet.

My Bell Mag-8 will not fit under the Buddy seat. An HJC CS-2 will.

What kind of helmet do you wear?

Post by vantage »

I was wondering what type of helmets folks here are wearing. What brands are the best value for features and safety?

I have a half helmet, because that was all the shop I bought the bike had in my size. I plan to buy either a 3/4, modular or full helmet.

I saw a diagram that showed where damage takes place on helmets, and my half helmet seems very inadequate to me.

The Modulars seem to be the most interesting, having options. I am afraid if I buy a full face, I will end up wearing the half if it is hot. Having the option of lifting the front to adjust glasses, or get hair in place at a stop is appealing

I love my full face when it is cooler. I have a modular as well, and I like that in the heat. I still have the visor down when moving most of the time, but at lights it is nice to open it up.

Scorpion has treated me well, even if they are not the best fit for my head. I also had an old Vega.

There is no "perfect" helmet. Each rider's needs are different as are tastes and fit. And, as to which is "better" or "safer" is the easiest way to start a flame war that would make the mac vs pc debate seem level headed and calm

There are plenty of helmet threads that cover this ground, and are worth a good search. Comfort and fit are the most important and the only one I'll touch on (in order to avoid heat from the other topics), since you won't wear a helmet that doesn't fit right! A well fitting full-face will cool you just as well if not better than some 3/4's or half helmets because they circulate air evenly within the helmet. And, the more shielding from the sun the better!

As for helmets for me, I am IMPOSSIBLE to shop for. I have a long oval head and an 8 1/4 hat size!!! This makes for a VERY large head. My Kangol caps have to be purchased in XXL, and about 90% of the helmets on the market will never fit me. I literally can only wear TWO helmets in the entire Cycle Gear brick-and-mortar store. Not two *brands*... but two. One by Bilt (that I don't even remember the name of. A full face matte simple one) and the Scorpion EXO-100 half helmet.

Makes for a very sad rider :(

I wear a Scorpion Exo 700 (size large I think) and it fits under the seat, but its somewhat tight. I worry that someone might sit on my scooter while its parked and possibly damage the top of the helmet.

Im thinking of switching to the Exo 100 so that it fits better. I haven't figured out my sweet spot as far as safety vs comfort goes. Right now, I feel overgeared to the point that ridings not much fun.
