Decided to trade in the Buddy after only 6 months
I have put almost 8000 miles on her in that time, and she is an awesome bike to ride. However i want the Blur.
Is there anyone here on this forum that understands financial value of Buddies?
She is in perfect condition, serviced monthly and new tires. There is nothing wrong with her at all. The dealer would offer only $1600 as a part exchange, but im sure i can get a better deal so was going to advertise her privately to see what I could get. However i do not know what to advertise her for. I do not want to under sell her, but on the same token i do not want to be drastic and not get any offers.
So a 2012 Buddy 170i with just shy of 8k in miles, full service history and no damage at all to her. What should i expect?
Thanks for the help

I'd look around on scooterfinds.com and CL and see what others are asking. Also, check out NADA.
If you wait until March you might command a bit more when the season is on the cusp...
Oh, yeah, and always start out asking your top dollar and maybe leave a bit open to negotiate...
Good luck!

You probably won't have much luck selling it or getting much until the weather warms up, especially up in Boston. Not many used 170s floating around yet... on top of that at 8k miles you are gonna start needing certain maintanance items done: rollers, belt, tires... unless you had that taken care of already.

Re: Decided to trade in the Buddy after only 6 months
I put a generic Boston Zip Code into Kelley Blue Book and they suggest a "trade-in" value of $1700. If your dealer is offering $1600 on an example with 8K miles on it, I'd be inclined to see if they would meet you in the middle at $1650 and let it go. My point being that I don't think they're lowballing you or treating you unfairly. My $0.02.uklemond wrote:The dealer would offer only $1600 as a part exchange...
P.S. NADA has a stub entry for your scooter year and model, but it's not populated with values, so I went with Kelley.

Nope...doesn't transfer.PeteH wrote:Sadly, no.BeefSupreme wrote:Are Genuine's warranties transferrable? That could be a big selling point for a higher milage scoot.
For a trade from a dealer I think $1600 is reasonable for a scooter he is going to have to go through and resell. 8k in six months shows that it has been ridden pretty hard...I know I know...all service has been done...but it still has 8k miles on it.
If you think you can do better than that go for it but it's a tough time of year to try to scoot.net or CL a scooter in that area for more than what the dealer is offering.
If I was listing it I would put it up for $2100 and take $1,800

To add to BuddyRaton's, even if you get $1800, you have to balance that against the convenience (both in effort and time) of just using it as a trade-in for the Blur. It's similar to trading-in a car when buying new. Sure you can probably get a bit more selling it yourself but using it as a trade-in is quick and easy. Your time-investment has a cost, too.
Don't get me wrong, I'm as cheap (and probably cheaper) as the next guy but you have to do what feels right.

Annnd,
Don't forget that the sales taxes are reduced.......for example:
The new machine is (number out of thin air) 3500.00
Your trade in is shown as 1600.00
You are only taxed on 1900.00.....the difference after the trade in.
So, to break even on a private sale you have to add the taxes you will be exposed to on a bike with no trade.
Say your vehicle sales tax is 8% for example.
8% of 3500.00 is 280.00
So, to break even on your private sale you would have to add 280.00 to the 1600.00 trade value, ie, 1880.00.
Therefore, you would have to agree to a sale price of 1880.00 to match the trade in value of 1600.00.
Good luck wrestling with your decision!
Rob

With 8K miles in 6 months it's a high mileage, a very high mileage scoot and in spite of its perfect condition, regular maintenance and new tires (to be expected at 8K miles) it's not an easy resell. Let's face it, potential buyers of a used 1 year old vehicle just want low to average miles and are turned off by anything above that unless it's an absolute rock bottom give away price. With that in mind, I'd say the dealer's offer of $1600 is more than reasonable recognizing that (1) it's still winter in the NE and (2) he's probably going to have it in his inventory until spring so I'd jump on it before he changes his mind. And as has already been pointed out if MA is a sales tax state, you're going to save a few $ with the trade-in difference. Now, a reasonable alternative would be to wait until spring and if you're still in the mood for that Blur, put your high mileage 170i on CL at $2,200 and if you get a $2,000 offer, grab it quick.

Wouldn't he only need to get $1728($1600+8%tax) since he would still get taxed on the $1900 difference?Robbie wrote:Annnd,

$1600 trade? Sheesh, keep the Buddy. Buy a used Blur when one comes available. They do not hold their value at all. It's not uncommon to see a used Blur 220 for c.$2500. I say this from experience.

However, the fact remains you are often better off trading in to offset the sales tax load.
